{"id":7588,"date":"2017-05-11T10:00:24","date_gmt":"2017-05-11T10:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.monsterindia.com\/career-advice\/why-malaysian-women-want-to-call-it-quits-7588\/"},"modified":"2023-09-28T16:22:02","modified_gmt":"2023-09-28T10:52:02","slug":"why-malaysian-women-want-to-call-it-quits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.foundit.my\/career-advice\/why-malaysian-women-want-to-call-it-quits\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Malaysian women want to call it quits"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto\" src=\"http:\/\/media.monsterindia.com\/cmsimages\/1494409540.jpg\" alt=\"Why Malaysian women want to call it quits\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif\">An alarming 67% women professionals in Malaysia are planning to call it quits in the next 12 months over the lack of family-friendly policies at their companies, reveals a new study by Monster.com.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif\">We\u2019re breaking down the top 3 reasons cited from the recently conducted survey:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif\">Discrimination is rampant <\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif\">Unfortunately, women in Malaysia are still subjected to discrimination at work and their biggest hurdle is \u201chow they are perceived\u201d by colleagues and clients (41%), followed by a lack of opportunity to advance or gain promotion (40%).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif\">At the heart of the problem is the fact that their demands for equal opportunity and access to senior management are consistently overlooked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif\">What can you do?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif\">If you feel that a colleague is being sexist or disrespectful \u2013 speak up! Pull him\/her aside to discuss the matter privately. You don\u2019t need to force an argument \u2014 just make your position clear. A friendly reminder about what is and isn&#8217;t OK may be all that was needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif\">Toxic Work environment <\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif\">One-third of women who responded to the survey said they \u201cagree\u201d or \u201csomewhat agree\u201d that having children affects their career goals and opportunities, while 30% of women with children believe they have been held back because of their decision to have kids.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif\"><em>What can you do?<\/em><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif\">Sexism in the workplace is more complicated, subtle, and dogged than many women realise. Infact, any job interview questions related to your family status are technically illegal, but employers often ask them anyway. If you\u2019re uncomfortable answering these questions, politely steer the conversation away by saying \u201cI\u2019m not sure how this is related to the job\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif\">Nothing related to gender should be asked in the interview process or other related matters\u2014at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif\">Stereotypes are common <\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif\">Being a successful career woman, wife and mother is a challenging task. 19% of women said they haven\u2019t been given certain responsibilities at work because of their commitments at home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif\">What can you do?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif\">To shatter workplace stereotypes, women must believe that they juggle their personal and professional lives. If you\u2019ve been overlooked, bring it up with management, and make sure you produce a record of your achievements, big and small.
