Not every organisation conduct exits interviews, so when they do it\u2019s probably because they care about why you\u2019re leaving and are hoping to gain insights from your departure.<\/span><\/p>\n

While it\u2019s easy to turn an exit interview into a bitter rant, it is better to deliver the message with some degree of sensitivity and positivity.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here are some tips to surviving an exit interview:<\/span><\/p>\n

Ask for anonymity<\/span><\/strong>
\nAsk for anonymity and make sure that you have it in writing. You\u2019re more likely to feel to be open and honest if your employer can guarantee confidentiality. After all, no one wants to upset their boss or colleagues with criticism and complaints.<\/span><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t snitch<\/span><\/strong>
\nIf a bad boss or toxic work environment is the reason you\u2019re leaving, then say so \u2013 but don\u2019t expose other colleagues that may or may not support your view.<\/span>

\nIt\u2019s important for you to examine your own intentions. Are you trying to help the company or do you want to get back at someone? Our advice: Stick to your own views.<\/span><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t burn bridges<\/strong>
\n<\/span>In today\u2019s highly connected world, it would be foolish to walk off in a huff. If you\u2019ve had a less than pleasant experience \u2013 convey it tactfully, but don\u2019t point fingers or come off sounding like a victim. It\u2019s a small world and you may end up needing a reference or working with one of your colleagues again.<\/span><\/p>\n

Offer constructive solutions<\/strong>
\n<\/span>If you feel strongly on a matter, try not to get emotional about it \u2013 instead make recommendations and talk more generally. For example, replace \u201cI hate my micro-managing boss\u201d to \u201cThe team\u2019s productivity would greatly improve without so many meetings with management\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n
