About the Role
Sungrow is expanding its advanced real-time simulation capabilities. We are seeking a highly technical HIL Simulation Engineer for the local Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) laboratory to strengthen our real-time simulation laboratory.
In this hands-on individual contributor role, you will focus on the validation and grid compliance certification of utility-scale BESS and PV inverters using real-time simulation platforms. You will serve as a key technical expert and bridge between regional teams, global R&D, Control Engineering, Technical Marketing, and Grid Compliance groups. A major part of the role involves using the regional lab to reproduce on-site issues, coordinate with headquarters, and drive timely technical resolutions.
We are looking for a strong technical expert with deep hands-on experience in real-time simulation and a proven track record in power system validation, grid interconnection, and project delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Grid Compliance
- Design, develop, and maintain CHIL and PHIL test environments using real-time simulation platforms.
- Lead verification and certification activities for BESS and PV inverter controls to comply with major international grid codes (IEEE 1547, VDE-AR-N 4110/4120, EREC G99, NEM, etc.).
- Develop and validate dynamic plant models, including inverter models, battery models, and Power Plant Controller (PPC) logic.
- Drive test automation using Python or similar tools to improve efficiency and repeatability.
- Serve as a high-level technical escalation point for complex control, communication (Modbus, DNP3, IEC 61850), and grid interconnection issues.
- Reproduce and analyze on-site problems in the regional lab, coordinate with headquarters, and ensure timely closure of technical issues.
- Lead end-to-end execution of regional semi-physical grid simulation projects and customer delivery projects.
Cross-Functional & Technical Marketing Support
- Generate simulation-backed data and reports to support technical marketing, white papers, and brand authority.
- Host laboratory visits and deliver real-time HIL demonstrations to customers, utilities, and key stakeholders.
- Collaborate with Sales and Technical solution engineering teams to provide expert technical input during bidding and project phases.
Laboratory Technical Support
- Perform hands-on testing and validation work in the state-of-the-art real-time HIL laboratory.
- Support efficient scheduling and utilization of test resources to meet project deadlines.
- Provide technical input on hardware/software needs and platform enhancements.
Requirements
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, Control Systems, or a related field.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in real-time simulation, HIL testing, or inverter/BESS control validation.
- Demonstrated technical leadership on complex projects (strong individual contributor with influence).
Technical Expertise
- Strong proficiency with real-time simulation platforms and the ability to build, run, and troubleshoot complex models.
- Deep understanding of utility-scale PV inverters and BESS operation, control strategies, and grid behavior.
- Extensive experience with international grid codes and interconnection requirements (fault ride-through, voltage/frequency support, power quality, etc.).
- Strong programming skills in Python, C/C++, MATLAB/Simulink for test automation and model development.
- Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (Modbus TCP/RTU, DNP3, IEC 61850).
Preferred / Bonus
- Experience with plant-level (station-level) semi-physical simulation models.
- Joint commissioning experience with third-party systems such as EMS or SVG.
- Exposure to multiple real-time simulation platforms.
Language Requirement
Candidates must be fluent in either English or Chinese. Bilingual proficiency in both is a strong advantage.
Travel Requirement
Regional and international travel may be required to support project coordination, lab activities and stakeholder engagement.
