Position Summary
The RBI Engineer is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining Risk-Based Inspection (RBI) programmes for static/fixed equipment, piping, and pipelines, in order to optimise inspection intervals, manage integrity risk, and ensure safe, reliable operation of assets. This role applies API 580/581 RBI methodologies to assess probability and consequence of failure, define inspection strategies, and support the broader asset integrity management programme. The RBI Engineer works closely with inspection, corrosion, process, and maintenance teams to ensure RBI outputs are practical, risk-based, and aligned with operational realities.
Key Responsibilities
RBI Programme Development & Assessment
• Develop and maintain RBI assessments for pressure vessels, piping, tanks, and pipelines in accordance with API 580/581 methodologies.
• Identify and evaluate damage mechanisms, corrosion loops, and failure modes affecting equipment integrity.
• Perform qualitative, semi-quantitative, and quantitative RBI analyses to determine probability of failure (PoF) and consequence of failure (CoF).
• Establish and optimise inspection intervals, scopes, and techniques based on RBI outputs to balance risk and cost.
Inspection Planning & Technical Support
• Translate RBI outputs into practical inspection plans, working closely with the inspection team to define scopes for turnarounds and routine inspections.
• Provide fixed equipment engineering consulting to inspectors, operators, and engineers, including remaining life assessment and fitness-for-service input.
• Support the development of repair, replacement, and mitigation strategies for equipment identified as high risk.
• Participate in the planning and execution of RBI-related work scopes for plant turnarounds and capital projects.
Data Management & Software
• Maintain and update RBI software/databases (e.g. Meridium/APM or equivalent) with accurate equipment, inspection, and corrosion data.
• Establish sampling plans and coordinate with laboratories/corrosion engineers to verify parameters used in RBI calculations.
• Ensure RBI data quality, traceability, and integration with CMMS/EAM systems.
• Prepare RBI reports, risk matrices, and dashboards for management and technical review.
Compliance, Governance & Coordination
• Ensure RBI programmes comply with relevant codes and standards (API 510, 570, 571, 579, 580, 581, 584) and company integrity management procedures.
• Support revision of RBI guidelines and ensure a consistent RBI philosophy is applied across assets.
• Liaise with inspection, corrosion, process, and maintenance teams to ensure RBI recommendations are practical and actionable.
• Prioritise health, safety, security, and environmental considerations in all RBI-related activities and recommendations.
Key Requirements
• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Metallurgical, or a related Engineering discipline.
• 5–10 years of experience in inspection, integrity engineering, or RBI, ideally within oil & gas or petrochemical operations.
• API 580 certification required; API 510/570/571/653 or equivalent inspection certifications an advantage.
• Strong knowledge of damage mechanisms, corrosion engineering, materials, and fitness-for-service assessment principles.
• Experience with RBI software tools (e.g. Meridium/APM or equivalent) and CMMS/EAM integration.
• Strong analytical and report-writing skills, with the ability to communicate risk-based recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Willingness to travel to site/offshore locations and support turnaround activities as required.
