About the Role
Canaan Inc. is a leading RISC-V chip design company powering the world's most efficient Bitcoin mining machines. We're looking for an Embedded Software QA Engineer to own quality for the mining machine software stack — validating BSP and firmware, testing the communication layer between mining machines and remote computing centers, and building the automation that keeps a large deployed fleet reliable.
Location: US Hybrid · San Francisco Bay Area preferred
Responsibilities
- Own the test strategy, coverage goals, and release quality gates for mining machine software on RISC-V SoCs
- Validate BSP, U-Boot, and Linux kernel releases — boot integrity, recovery, and reliability across hardware revisions
- Test long-connection communication with remote computing centers under high concurrency, packet loss, latency, and reconnect scenarios
- Verify control, power regulation, and safety logic via fault injection and edge-condition testing
- Run sustained load, soak, and stress tests for hash rate, power efficiency, thermal, and memory footprint
- Build automated test frameworks and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) benches; integrate them into CI/CD with clear pass/fail gating
- Validate secure boot, device authentication, and communication encryption
- Reproduce, triage, and drive defects to root cause; support mass-production and field-return quality
Requirements
Essential
- Bachelor's or above in CS, Electronics, Automation, or related field
- 3+ years embedded software QA / test engineering, including at least one product cycle to mass production
- Familiarity with RISC-V or ARM Cortex platforms and Linux/U-Boot from a validation perspective
- Proven experience building automated test frameworks and HIL benches
- Hands-on validating UART/SPI/I2C, NAND/NOR Flash, Ethernet, WiFi/BLE
- Strong TCP/IP, MQTT, HTTP knowledge; experience testing long-connection, high-concurrency communication
- Proficiency in Python/Shell; able to read C/C++
- Experience with CI/CD for embedded testing
Nice to Have
- Bitcoin miner or HPC chip validation experience
- Fault injection, fuzzing, or protocol conformance testing
- RTOS (FreeRTOS / RT-Thread) and Canaan RISC-V MCU (K210, K230)
- Yocto / OpenEmbedded
