Job Description: AS400 COBOL Developer

Location: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Work Type: Full-Time (On-site / Hybrid)

About the Role

We are working with a leading global technology and consulting organisation supporting enterprise clients across multiple industries. The team delivers large-scale application development, modernization and support services, with a strong focus on legacy platforms and mission-critical systems.

This role is ideal for a developer with experience in AS400 / COBOL environments who is looking to work on complex systems, contribute to large-scale projects, and collaborate within a structured, high-performance delivery environment.

Role Overview

The AS400 COBOL Developer will be responsible for developing, enhancing and maintaining applications within an IBM i (AS400) environment. The role involves working closely with cross-functional teams to deliver reliable and scalable solutions that support business-critical operations.

The individual will contribute across the full software development lifecycle, including design, development, testing, deployment and ongoing support.

Key Responsibilities

1. Application Development & Enhancement

  • Develop, maintain and enhance applications using AS400 COBOL
  • Build new components and functionalities based on business requirements
  • Modify and optimise existing systems to improve performance and reliability
  • Ensure adherence to coding standards and development best practices

2. System Integration & Configuration

  • Configure and support packaged software and enterprise applications
  • Integrate legacy systems with modern platforms where required
  • Utilise system features and tools to deliver efficient and scalable solutions

3. Testing & Quality Assurance

  • Perform unit testing, system testing and support user acceptance testing (UAT)
  • Troubleshoot and resolve defects and performance issues
  • Ensure high-quality deliverables aligned with project standards

4. Production Support & Deployment

  • Support application releases into production environments
  • Assist in deployment planning, scheduling and execution
  • Provide post-deployment support and issue resolution
  • Ensure system stability and performance in live environments

5. Collaboration & Problem Solving

  • Work closely with business analysts, project managers and technical teams
  • Participate in technical discussions and solution design sessions
  • Contribute ideas and solutions to address project challenges
  • Operate independently while also collaborating within a team environment

6. Continuous Improvement & Learning

  • Stay updated on legacy and modernisation technologies
  • Contribute to knowledge sharing within the team
  • Participate in training and upskilling initiatives

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related field
  • Minimum 13 years of experience in AS400 / COBOL development
  • Strong proficiency in:
  • AS400 COBOL
  • IBM i (AS400) environment
  • Experience in application development and maintenance
  • Understanding of software development lifecycle (SDLC)

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with IBM DB2/400 or similar database technologies
  • Exposure to system integration and legacy modernization projects
  • Familiarity with enterprise application environments
  • Experience working in structured delivery or consulting environments
