1. Role Overview
The Assistant Manager, Design Engineering leads and coordinates the design and engineering activities for utility-scale Large-Scale Solar (LSS) projects. This role ensures that all technical designs meet project requirements, regulatory standards, and industry best practices while supporting the overall delivery of high-quality engineering outputs. The position supports the Manager/Head of Design in overseeing engineering workflows and guiding the design team.
2. Key Responsibilities
A. LSS System Design & Technical Engineering
- Lead and review the design of utility-scale solar PV systems, including site layout, SLDs, cable routing, inverter stations, SCADA, earthing, and protection systems.
- Perform or review technical calculations (energy yield, voltage drop, short circuit, grounding, cable sizing, etc.).
- Ensure designs comply with relevant standards, including Suruhanjaya Tenaga (ST), TNB, CIDB, IEC, MS, and project specifications.
- Optimise system configurations for performance, cost efficiency, and constructability.
B. Engineering Deliverables & Quality Assurance
- Manage preparation of engineering drawings, BOQs, technical reports, and design documentation.
- Review submissions from consultants, suppliers, and contractors to ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Implement design standards, templates, and engineering quality controls.
- Conduct technical risk assessments and propose mitigation strategies.
C. Project Coordination & Stakeholder Management
- Coordinate with Project Managers, Procurement, HSSE, Construction, and other internal teams to align design requirements with project timelines.
- Attend technical meetings with clients, authorities, and partners to address design issues and clarifications.
- Support authority submissions including TNB, ST, local councils, and environmental agencies where required.
D. Team Leadership & Development
- Provide guidance, technical support, and oversight to junior engineers and CAD designers.
- Delegate work, monitor progress, and ensure timely completion of design tasks.
- Support training and development initiatives toteam competency and performance.
E. Continuous Improvement & Technology Updates
- Improve design workflows, engineering standards, and internal SOPs.
- Stay updated on new technologies (modules, inverters, trackers, BESS) and grid requirements.
- Contribute to R&D, feasibility studies, and tender proposals for future LSS projects.
3. Qualifications & Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field (required).
- Minimum 57 years experience in solar PV design, with strong exposure to LSS/utility-scale projects.
- Proficient in PV design software (PVsyst, AutoCAD, Helioscope, SketchUp).
- Strong understanding of TNB grid rules, ST requirements, and utility-scale PV system standards.
- Demonstrated experience leading engineering deliverables or overseeing a small team.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project coordination skills.
- Excellent communication, technical writing, and stakeholder-management abilities.
