Role Description The Chief Engineer at Fairfield by Marriott in Kota Kinabalu is a full-time, on-site role responsible for overseeing all engineering and maintenance operations within the hotel. This role manages the preventative maintenance program, ensures building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and life safety) operate efficiently, and coordinates repairs to maintain guest comfort and safety. The Chief Engineer leads and schedules the engineering team, monitors contractor work, and maintains accurate records of maintenance activities and regulatory compliance. Daily responsibilities include inspecting hotel facilities, responding promptly to maintenance requests, managing inventory of tools and supplies, and supporting energy-efficiency and sustainability initiatives. The role collaborates closely with hotel leadership to minimize downtime, uphold brand standards, and provide a well-maintained environment that aligns with Fairfield's commitment to an effortless guest experience.
Qualifications
  • Strong technical skills in building maintenance, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical systems, and life safety equipment.
  • Experience with preventive maintenance programs, facility inspections, and troubleshooting of hotel or commercial building systems.
  • Leadership and team management abilities, including scheduling, training, and performance oversight of engineering staff.
  • Knowledge of local building codes, safety regulations, and compliance standards relevant to hotel operations.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills to work with hotel management, vendors, and cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to manage budgets, control maintenance costs, and oversee contractors and external service providers.
  • Proficiency in using maintenance management software, basic computer applications, and documentation tools.
  • Relevant technical certification or diploma in engineering, building services, or a related field; prior hotel or hospitality engineering experience is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, quality, and guest satisfaction, with the ability to respond to maintenance issues on short notice when needed.
