Role Description The Cobol Programmer role is a contract, on-site position based in WP. Kuala Lumpur. The individual in this role will design, develop, test, and maintain COBOL programs for enterprise systems, ensuring reliability, performance, and compliance with business and regulatory requirements. Day-to-day tasks include analyzing user and business requirements, writing and optimizing COBOL code, performing debugging and troubleshooting, and creating technical documentation. The role involves collaborating closely with project managers, business analysts, and other technical team members to support legacy system modernization, integration with new platforms, and ongoing production support. The Cobol Programmer will also participate in code reviews, contribute to process improvements, and help ensure that project milestones are delivered on schedule and to quality standards.
Qualifications
  • Strong COBOL programming skills, including experience with structured and batch processing, and maintenance of legacy enterprise systems.
  • Hands-on experience with mainframe environments (e.g., IBM z/OS), JCL, and related tools used for deployment, scheduling, and monitoring.
  • Ability to analyze business requirements, translate them into technical specifications, and produce clear, concise technical documentation.
  • Knowledge of databases commonly used with COBOL applications (such as DB2 or VSAM) and proficiency in writing and optimizing queries.
  • Experience with software development life cycle (SDLC), including unit testing, integration testing, and version control practices.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to troubleshoot complex issues in production environments.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work closely with cross-functional and multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Relevant academic background in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience in project-based or consulting environments and familiarity with financial, government
