Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY - This position is based in Georgetown, Guyana.

The Communications Manager (CM) is responsible for designing, implementing and managing CI-Guyana's internal and external communications strategies. The CM uses communication tools, materials, and products to inform the public and key targeted groups of CI-Guyana's plans and work. The CM establishes and cultivates strong relationships with the local media and other communication partners of CI-Guyana. The CM helps the organization create and disseminate key messages and enables interactions with key audiences using a variety of media, including social media, generating a range of products including blogs, social media postings, websites content and press releases for national and international media.

The position manages the production and distribution of publications and other communication materials of CI-Guyana. The CM also maintains and updates a database of all communication materials, such as photos, videos, bulletins, reports and blogs. The CM is responsible for managing CI-Guyana's contribution to internal communication products at the local, regional and global levels within CI, for example through contributions to monthly Program Reports, the President´s Letter, and CI Connect posts. The position collaborates to strengthen the communication capacities of CI-Guyana's staff and manages communication events to foster greater understanding and support for CI's partnerships and mission.

The CM reviews, analyzes, and reports on the effectiveness of CI-Guyana's communication efforts; provides periodic reports to help management assess the effectiveness of various media and communication strategies; and stays abreast of media trends and to identify opportunities for CI-Guyana to strengthen its messages and build awareness with key audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Define and deliver measurable communications objectives (impact), priorities and activities within an annual communication strategy and workplan- ensuring full alignment with CI-Guyana's Program strategy and annual deliverables.
  • Direct the creation and timely updating of high‑impact traditional and non-traditional communications assets (videos, slide decks, factsheets, infographics, reports, blog posts, web pages, social media campaigns), approving final outputs and ensuring they meet both programmatic needs and institutional brand standards.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with CI's communication teams in other country programs —sharing best practices, adapting proven tools and strategies, and coordinating joint initiatives to amplify CI‑Guyana's reach.
  • Serve as CI-Guyana's primary point of contact for the local press; leading CI-Guyana contribution to the enhancement of the coverage of nature and sustainable development topics in the press; proactively identify story angles, pitch features and build sustained media capacity interest in conservation, sustainable development and CI‑Guyana's work; lead all media relations activities, leading the preparation of media releases and feature articles, press conferences, interviews and speaking engagements.
  • Lead planning and execution of CI‑Guyana public interactions (exhibitions, etc.) and support the execution of stakeholder engagements (workshops, field days, stakeholder forums), and ensure CI-Guyana spokespeople are fully briefed and supported with accurate talking points and materials.
  • Lead preparation of CI-Guyana's public Annual Impact Reports; setting the editorial vision, coordinating contributors; and ensuring timely publication.
  • Ensure that CI‑Guyana's online presence, especially website and social media channels are maintained current and effective—approve content calendars, monitoring performance metrics, and guiding design/content updates in line with institutional policies.
  • Lead internal information-sharing across CI-Guyana and with Global CI networks: identify news-worthy developments, draft executive updates, and contribute to CI's internal communications platforms, such as CI Connect.
  • Implement systems for cataloguing and managing CI‑Guyana's electronic and physical audio‑visual and document libraries—guaranteeing easy retrieval, consistent information and appropriate archiving.
  • Set standards and workflows for photographic and video coverage of CI‑Guyana activities and events, and oversee the delivery of high‑quality visual assets to support communications and reporting needs.
  • Manage the work of the Rupununi Communications Coordinator, ensuring mentorship and growth for the delivery of high-quality work.
  • Facilitate trainings, coaching and other initiatives to enhance the of CI-Guyana staff communication capacity.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Based in CI-Guyana's Georgetown, Guyana office on a normal basis but may be required to work out of the Lethem or under field conditions from time to time.
  • While in the field, regular office hours (9:00 - 17:00hrs) may not be observed and hours of work are flexible according to the work to be done.
  • Local travel required.
  • International may be expected.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree or equivalent in public communications, natural resources management or related field with a minimum of four years experience in public communications, journalism, or marketing; or a diploma or equivalent in public communications or a related field with a minimum of six years of strong experience in public communication, journalism or marketing.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Knowledge of Spanish and/or Portuguese would be an asset
  • Excellent command of language and communication skills, both written and spoken
  • Ability to work in diverse teams
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and networking skills
  • Experience in the use of Microsoft Office, and common desktop publishing or audio-visual production software
  • Experience in the use of photographic and audio/visual equipment would be a distinct asset
  • Experience in the production of communication materials in a variety of media would be an asset.
