Role Summary
We are seeking a meticulous
Defect CSA Engineer to join our project team for data center construction in Malaysia. This role focuses on the technical execution of
Civil, Structural, and Architectural defect identification, verification, and rectification oversight. You will work closely with the Defect Manager to ensure all structural elements and architectural finishes meet the highest standards of quality, durability, and compliance prior to commissioning and handover.
Key Responsibilities
- Defect Inspection & Technical Assessment
- Conduct detailed CSA defect inspections during the construction and pre-commissioning phases, focusing on concrete structures, steel erection, façade systems, and architectural finishes.
- Perform technical assessment of defects (e.g., concrete spalling, honeycombing, cracking, water leakage, tiling defects), classifying them by severity and impact on structural integrity or performance.
- Utilize approved structural drawings, architectural specifications, and method statements to verify the accuracy of defect identification.
- Rectification Verification & Testing
- Review contractor-submitted rectification proposals for structural repairs, façade remediation, and finish replacements to ensure technical correctness.
- Supervise on-site rework activities by civil and architectural subcontractors to ensure adherence to quality standards and safety protocols.
- Witness and verify post-rectification tests, such as waterproofing tests, load testing, anchorage pull-out tests, and façade mock-up validations.
- Quality Control & Compliance
- Ensure all rectified works strictly comply with project specifications, local building codes, and industry standards (e.g., ACI, ASTM, BS, MS codes).
- Perform random quality checks on completed civil and architectural installations to detect potential latent defects early.
- Assist in preparing technical documentation for internal and third-party quality audits related to structural and architectural scope.
- Coordination & Reporting
- Coordinate with civil, structural, and architectural subcontractors and the main construction team on daily defect closure activities.
- Maintain accurate records of defect status in the defect register and provide regular updates to the Defect Manager.
- Participate in defect review meetings and prepare technical reports on defect trends, particularly for recurring structural or waterproofing issues.
- Documentation & Handover Support
- Accurately document defect reports, photographic evidence, and inspection findings specific to CSA works.
- Assist in updating as-built structural drawings and compiling final handover documentation, including warranty certificates for structural and façade systems.
- Verify that all CSA-related punch list items are technically resolved and formally closed prior to handover.
- Technical Feedback & Improvement
- Analyze root causes of specific structural or architectural defects (e.g., formwork failure, curing issues, sealant failure) and suggest corrective measures.
- Provide technical feedback to the design and construction teams to prevent recurrence of similar issues in future projects.
Qualifications & Experience
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or Architecture.
Experience
- Minimum 5–7 years of experience in construction, with significant exposure to defect management, quality control, or site engineering for large-scale industrial or commercial buildings.
- Proven experience working on data center or mission-critical facility projects is highly preferred.
- Experience with construction projects in Malaysia or Southeast Asia is an advantage.
Technical Knowledge
- Solid understanding of concrete technology, structural steelworks, geotechnical works, façade systems, and architectural finishes.
- Familiar with construction standards and testing protocols (e.g., ACI, ASTM, BS, MS EN standards).
- Knowledge of data center white space vs. grey space construction requirements is a plus.
Certifications (Preferred)
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent local accreditation.
- Certification in Quality Control (e.g., CQC, CCQM).
- LEED Green Associate or relevant sustainability certifications.
