Role Summary

We are seeking a detail-oriented Defect MEP Engineer to join our project team for data center construction in Malaysia. This role focuses on the technical execution of MEP defect identification, verification, and rectification oversight. You will work closely with the Defect MEP Manager to ensure all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems are rectified to the highest standards and are fully compliant prior to commissioning and handover.

Key Responsibilities

  • Defect Inspection & Technical Assessment
  • Conduct detailed MEP defect inspections during construction and commissioning phases.
  • Perform technical assessment of defects, classifying them by severity, system type, and impact on safety or performance.
  • Utilize approved drawings and specifications to verify the accuracy of defect identification.
  • Rectification Verification & Testing
  • Review contractor-submitted rectification proposals for technical correctness and compliance.
  • Supervise on-site rework activities by MEP subcontractors to ensure adherence to quality standards.
  • Witness and verify re-testing and re-commissioning of equipment and systems (e.g., HVAC, electrical, fire protection) post-rectification.
  • Quality Control & Compliance
  • Ensure all rectified works strictly comply with project specifications, industry standards, and local regulations.
  • Perform random quality checks on completed MEP installations to detect potential defects early.
  • Assist in preparing technical documentation for internal and third-party quality audits.
  • Coordination & Reporting
  • Coordinate with MEP subcontractors and the construction team on daily defect closure activities.
  • Maintain accurate records of defect status and provide regular updates to the Defect MEP Manager.
  • Participate in defect review meetings and prepare technical reports on defect trends and progress.
  • Documentation & Handover Support
  • Accurately document defect reports, inspection findings, test results, and photographic evidence.
  • Assist in updating as-built drawings and compiling final handover documentation, including O&M manuals.
  • Verify that all punch list items are technically resolved and formally closed prior to handover.
  • Technical Feedback & Improvement
  • Analyze root causes of specific technical defects and suggest corrective measures.
  • Provide technical feedback to the design and construction teams to prevent recurrence of similar issues.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Building Services Engineering.

Experience

  • Minimum 5–7 years of experience in MEP construction, with significant exposure to defect management, quality control, or commissioning.
  • Proven experience working on data center or mission-critical facility projects is highly preferred.
  • Experience with construction projects in Malaysia or Southeast Asia is an advantage.

Technical Knowledge

  • Solid understanding of MEP systems: HVAC, electrical distribution, UPS, generators, fire protection, plumbing, and BMS/ELV.
  • Familiar with data center construction standards, testing protocols, and commissioning procedures.

Certifications (Preferred)

  • LEED AP, CDCP (Certified Data Center Professional), or DCCA (Data Center Certified Associate).
  • Basic certification in Quality Control (e.g., CQC) is a plus.
