We are partnering with a leading insurer to appoint a General Counsel & Company Secretary as they continue to elevate their legal and governance capabilities in Malaysia.
This is a newly restructured and high-impact role, combining legal advisory and corporate secretarial responsibilities. As the organization enters a pivotal phase of transformation, the incoming leader will play a central role in restoring and reshaping the in-house legal function, embedding strategic governance, and advising the board and CEO on complex legal and regulatory matters.
Backed by both local scale and global strength, the company offers a compelling platform for legal professionals seeking influence, visibility, and the opportunity to lead change. With a multi-channel distribution model and a renewed focus on customer-first, digitally enabled solutions, this is an exciting time to join a business that is redefining the future of insurance in Malaysia.
What You'll Do
As General Counsel & Company Secretary, you will:
- Lead the legal and governance function, providing strategic counsel across all business activities, contracts, and regulatory matters.
- Oversee corporate secretarial duties for both Life and Takaful entities, ensuring full compliance with statutory and BNM requirements.
- Act as a trusted advisor to the CEO and senior leadership, aligning legal strategy with business goals and growth ambitions.
- Reshape and develop a junior legal team into a high-performing, business-aligned unit.
- Elevate board and regulatory engagement through confident leadership and sound governance practices.
- Define and implement governance frameworks, SOPs, and policies to drive operational excellence.
- Manage external legal vendors and ensure cost-effective, high-quality service delivery.
- Champion a culture of ethics, professionalism, and continuous improvement across the function.
- Promote data privacy, cybersecurity, and risk mitigation in all legal and governance activities.
What We're Looking For
We're seeking a strategic, confident legal leader with the gravitas to advise at board level and the agility to lead transformation in a dynamic, fast-evolving environment.
You'll bring:
- 15+ years of progressive legal experience, ideally within financial services, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.
- A Bachelor's Degree in Law (LLB); a Master's is an advantage.
- Licensed Company Secretary status, registered with the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM).
- Deep expertise in corporate governance, the Companies Act, and regulatory frameworks including Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) requirements.
- Strong business acumen and the ability to advise beyond a legal lens - connecting legal strategy to commercial outcomes.
- Proven experience in team transformation, stakeholder engagement, and navigating complex regulatory landscapes.
- High ethical standards, discretion, and the ability to manage sensitive matters with integrity.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and build trust across senior leadership, regulators, and external partners.
Why This Role Matters
This is a rare opportunity to lead a newly consolidated legal and governance function at a time of strategic renewal. You'll be at the heart of decision-making, with direct access to the CEO and regional leadership, and the mandate to shape culture, uplift team capability, and influence the company's future direction.
If you're a confident, strategic legal leader with board-level gravitas and a passion for transformation, this is your moment to make a lasting impact.
