We are seeking a commercially strong and regulator-ready General Manager to lead and scale the business across retail and corporate segments. This role is responsible for overall business performance, including profit and loss ownership, operational execution, regulatory compliance, financial stewardship, and alignment with global headquarters.

The successful candidate will serve as the key country leader for the Malaysia subsidiary and, subject to regulatory approval, will assume statutory leadership responsibilities for the local subsidiary. The role is best suited for candidates currently operating at a country management, business unit management, head of operations, head of business, or general management level within foreign exchange, banking, remittance, payments, treasury, or other regulated financial-services environments.

Why this role is different

This is not a customer service, branch supervisory, manufacturing, or general operations role. We are specifically looking for a candidate with strong financial-services leadership exposure, hands-on regulatory engagement, and proven experience managing business performance in a regulated environment.

Key responsibilities

Strategic and commercial leadership

  • Lead the Malaysia business with full accountability for growth, profitability, market expansion, and operational performance.
  • Define and execute the local business strategy across branch and digital channels in line with regional and global objectives.
  • Identify new market opportunities, customer segments, and revenue streams within the foreign exchange and related financial-services space.
  • Drive pricing, margin, and commercial initiatives to improve profitability and sustainable growth.

Financial and operational management

  • Own the country-level profit and loss, budgeting, forecasting, and financial performance management.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations including cash flow oversight, currency logistics, service quality, and branch efficiency.
  • Ensure accurate financial records, tax compliance, internal reporting, and disciplined cost management.
  • Establish and maintain strong operating procedures, controls, and performance standards across all locations.
  • Regulatory, compliance, and governance oversight
  • Ensure full compliance with Bank Negara Malaysia requirements and all applicable financial-services regulations.
  • Act as the primary local leader for regulatory, internal, and external audit matters.
  • Maintain effective internal controls, risk-management practices, and governance standards across the business.
  • Work closely with Compliance, Finance, Legal, HR, and Operations teams to ensure all local practices meet corporate and statutory requirements.

Leadership and stakeholder management

  • Lead, coach, and develop the local management team and branch leaders.
  • Build a high-performance culture with clear accountability, succession planning, and leadership development.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the Malaysia entity and global headquarters, providing business updates, strategic recommendations, and market insight.
  • Manage key external stakeholders including regulators, banking partners, suppliers, landlords, and service providers.

Mandatory regulatory requirement

  • The selected candidate must meet the Fit and Proper requirements of Bank Negara Malaysia for this statutory appointment.
  • Upon successful selection and regulatory approval, the candidate will be appointed to act as the statutory Chief Executive Officer of the local subsidiary, in line with corporate governance requirements.

Ideal candidate profile

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration, or a related
  • MBA or other relevant postgraduate qualification is an advantage.
  • At least 8 to 10 years of experience in financial services, with direct exposure to foreign exchange, retail banking, remittance, payments, treasury, or other regulated financial institutions.
  • At least 3 years in a senior managerial or country/business-unit leadership role with clear profit and loss accountability.
  • Demonstrated experience engaging with regulators, auditors, and central-bank or equivalent compliance frameworks.
  • Strong financial acumen, including budgeting, margin management, forecasting, and performance analysis.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams in a multinational and matrix environment.
  • Strong command of English; additional regional or European languages are an advantage.
  • Comfortable working across time zones and travelling when required.
