Key Responsibilities:
1. Regulatory Compliance & Liaison (Malaysia-Specific)
• Ensure full compliance with:
- Mineral Development Act 1994
- State Mineral Enactments (e.g., Pahang, Kelantan, Terengganu depending on site)
- Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) 1994
- Environmental Quality Act (EQA) 1974
• Liaise with relevant authorities such as:
- JMG (Jabatan Mineral dan Geosains Malaysia)
- DOE (Department of Environment)
- State Land & Mines Office (PTG)
• Ensure adherence to conditions under:
- Mining Lease / Prospecting License - Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) approvals
• Oversee submission of statutory and technical reports (e.g., production data, resource updates)
2. Strategic Mine Planning & Resource Management
• Oversee short-, mid-, and long-term mine planning aligned with approved mining schemes
• Ensure optimization of ore extraction for iron ore, nickel, and gold deposits
• Integrate geological models with mine design and production schedules
• Support Life of Mine (LOM) planning and reserve reporting
3. Geology & Grade Control
• Ensure robust grade control systems to minimize dilution and ore loss
• Supervise:
- Sampling, drilling, logging, and mapping activities
- Resource estimation in compliance with recognized standards (e.g., JORC where applicable)
• Ensure proper reconciliation between: Geological model vs. mined vs. processed grades
• Manage ore blending strategies to meet plant specifications
4. Mining Engineering & Operations
• Oversee pit design, sequencing, and production scheduling
• Ensure operations comply with approved mining plans submitted to JMG/State Authorities
• Monitor production targets, equipment productivity, and cost control
• Implement continuous improvement initiatives for operational efficiency
5. Geophysics & Survey Management
• Ensure accurate and compliant mine survey practices
• Oversee: Topographical surveys & Volume calculations for reporting to authorities
• Support near-term mine planning with updated spatial and geophysical data
• Ensure survey data meets regulatory and audit requirements
6. Safety, Health & Environmental (SHE) Management
• Promote and enforce compliance with OSHA 1994 & Factories and Machinery Act 1967 (where applicable)
• Ensure safe mine design (slope stability, benching, haul roads)
• Work closely with HSE team to mitigate environmental impacts (erosion, sedimentation, water discharge) & ensure compliance with EIA mitigation measures
• Support emergency response and risk assessments
7. Leadership & Team Management
• Lead multidisciplinary teams: Mining Engineering, Geology, Survey & Geophysics
• Develop succession planning and competency frameworks
• Ensure strong coordination between technical and operational teams
8. Reporting & Stakeholder Management
• Prepare and present reports to Senior Management & Government authorities (JMG, DOE, PTG)
• Support audits, inspections, and site visits by regulators
• Ensure accurate reporting of production, ore reserves/resources & environmental compliance
Key Requirements:
Education:
• Bachelor's Degree in Mining Engineering, Geology, or related discipline
• Professional certification (e.g., Geologist with BOG / Engineer with BEM) is an advantage
Experience:
• Minimum 8–12 years in mining operations (iron ore, nickel, or gold preferred)
• At least 3–5 years in a managerial role
• Experience dealing with Malaysian regulatory bodies (JMG, DOE, PTG) Skills & Competencies:
• Strong knowledge of:
- Mine planning & geological software (Surpac, Datamine, Vulcan, MineSched)
• Familiar with:
JORC Code / resource reporting standards
• Strong understanding of:
- Open-pit mining methods (common in Malaysia)
• Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills
