The Photonics Research Centre (PRC) at Universiti Malaya, a premier Higher Institution Centre of Excellence (HICoE), is seeking a highly motivated and meticulous Graduate Research Assistant (GRA). This role offers an exceptional opportunity to work on cutting-edge research in optical communications, fiber-optic sensors, laser technology, and nanophotonics.
The successful candidate will actively contribute to funded research projects while concurrently pursuing a postgraduate degree (Master's by Research or PhD) at Universiti Malaya.
Key Responsibilities
As a GRA, your duties will bridge academic research and practical laboratory operations:
- Experimental & Simulation Work: Design, set up, and conduct high-precision photonics experiments. Utilize simulation software to model optical components and wave propagation.
- Data Analysis: Collect, analyze, and interpret complex experimental data using statistical tools and programming languages.
- Documentation & Reporting: Maintain detailed, accurate laboratory notebooks. Prepare periodic progress reports for project milestone presentations to funders (e.g., MOHE, MOSTI).
- Academic Writing: Draft high-quality manuscripts for publication in high-impact, ISI-indexed journals, and prepare abstracts for international conferences.
- Lab Management: Assist in maintaining laboratory equipment (e.g., Optical Spectrum Analyzers, fusion splicers, laser sources), monitoring inventory, and ensuring strict compliance with lab safety protocols.
Requirements & Qualifications
Academic Standards:
- A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Physics, Electronic/Electrical Engineering, Photonics, Materials Science, or a closely related STEM field.
- A minimum CGPA of 3.00 (or equivalent) from a recognized tertiary institution.
Soft Skills:
- Strong command of written and spoken English, essential for writing research papers and delivering presentations.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a high degree of self-motivation.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research team.
