Head of Business Development (Renewable Energy)
Position Summary
The Head of Business Development will oversee the growth strategy for both large-scale utility and Commercial & Industrial (C&I) clean energy projects. This leadership role is responsible for driving pipeline expansion, structuring commercial deals, and managing a high-performing origination team to achieve regional expansion goals and financial targets.
Core Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Team Management
- Direct the regional business development team to meet corporate expansion and revenue targets.
- Convert high-level corporate strategies into regional market priorities and actionable sales pipelines.
- Identify emerging market opportunities, new client demographics, and innovative partnership structures.
- Mentor, coach, and establish performance metrics (KPIs) for the commercial team.
Pipeline Development & Deal Origination
- Maintain oversight of a comprehensive project pipeline from initial lead to financial close.
- Assess project viability, evaluating technical feasibility and baseline financial assumptions.
- Prioritize commercial opportunities based on risk profiles, projected returns, and strategic alignment.
Commercial Structuring & Negotiations
- Lead the structuring of complex energy contracts, including Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), corporate off-take agreements, joint ventures, and asset leases.
- Manage negotiations with external stakeholders, including utilities, corporate buyers, institutional investors, and EPC contractors.
- Collaborate with financial modeling teams to optimize project IRRs, tariff bidding strategies, and funding models.
Cross-Functional Execution & Governance
- Partner with Legal, Engineering, Finance, and Operations departments to streamline project handovers.
- Oversee bid preparation and risk analysis for public tenders and private bilateral agreements.
- Ensure all origination activities strictly adhere to corporate governance and risk mitigation frameworks.
Candidate Requirements
- Degree in Engineering, Finance, Business, or an Energy-related discipline (MBA or relevant Master's preferred).
- Professional certifications such as PMP, CFA, or technical solar credentials are advantageous.
- 10+ years of commercial or project development experience within the renewable energy or infrastructure sector.
- Proven track record of managing commercial teams and successfully closing utility-scale or C&I clean energy transactions.
- Strong understanding of project finance, PPA structures, and joint-venture frameworks.
- Excellent stakeholder management, negotiation, and risk evaluation capabilities.
