About the company

We are currently looking for a Head of Legal to oversee all legal matters within the group of companies.

About the role

Reporting to the Group Chief Executive Officer, the successful candidate will have responsibility for, but not limited to:

  • Managing and leading the drafting, preparation, negotiation and execution of a wide range of construction, procurement and project related contracts.
  • Managing and co-ordinating contractual disputes, litigation, mediation and arbitration matters, including pre-action strategy and formal proceedings to achieve commercially sound outcomes.
  • Identifying and managing legal, commercial and contractual risks and ensure appropriate mitigations are in place.
  • Providing clear, pragmatic and commercially focused legal advice to multi-disciplinary teams across the group.
  • Advising internal stakeholders on risk exposure and dispute resolution strategies.
  • Instructing and managing various external counsel to obtain, challenge and finalise legal advice, opinions and drafting on various projects and agreements and ensuring cost effective legal services.
  • Tracking and managing external legal spend ensuring alignment with budget expectations.

The Successful Applicant

The applicant should have:

  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB or equivalent) and admission to practice in Malaysia
  • At least 15 years post-qualification experience in legal, either in-house roles or legal practice, or a combination of both, with significant time spent in the construction or infrastructure industry.

  • Possess excellent contractual acumen particularly in reviewing and negotiating project documentation, including tender documents, subcontracts and standard forms (e.g. FIDIC, PAM or JKR contracts). Some experience dealing with CIPAA matters will be an advantage.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex legal and compliance matters in fast-paced environments, including involvement in high value dispute resolution matters.
  • Commercially minded, balancing legal risk with business priorities.
  • Proven leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence senior management.
