Job Description

Role Purpose:

This role is the principal legal resource for commercial contracting across insureMO's business, and carries Group-wide responsibility for compliance in the fields of data protection, trade sanctions and export controls, and anti-bribery. The successful candidate is expected to take matters from instruction through to signature with limited supervision, and to escalate by exception.

Key Responsibilities:

A. Commercial contracting and negotiation

  • To independently lead, manage and conclude contract negotiations with clients, business partners, distributors and suppliers across South East Asia, India Middle East and Africa, and other English-speaking markets;
  • To draft, review, interpret and finalise the full range of commercial documentation – master services agreements, subscription order forms, statements of work and change orders, partner, reseller and distribution agreements, procurement and vendor contracts, and AI-related addenda – working from insureMO standard templates and negotiating client and vendor paper where required;

B. Compliance, data protection and trade controls

  • To lead or support the design, drafting, roll-out and periodic optimisation of the Group's global compliance policies and controls – including data protection, trade sanctions and export controls, anti-bribery and anti-corruption, third-party and vendor due diligence, and responsible use of artificial intelligence – keeping them current with legal developments and business needs, and to prepare and deliver the related training;
  • To take the record for data protection across the Group's operating markets, covering data processing agreements, cross-border transfer mechanisms, records of processing, data subject requests, vendor privacy assessments and incident response support, under the Europe GDPR, Singapore PDPA, Malaysia PDPA, India DPDP Act, Brazil LGPD and other applicable regimes;
  • To operate and improve the Group's trade sanctions and export controls framework, including counterparty and end-user screening, assessment and escalation of restricted-party, restricted-jurisdiction and controlled-technology questions, and maintenance of the supporting records and audit trail;

C. Regional legal support and legal operations

  • To conduct legal and regulatory research on commercial, data protection, sanctions and other compliance matters across South East Asia, Europe, India, US, and the other markets in which the Group operates, and to convert the output into short, practical, decision-ready guidance for the business;
  • To support the management and resolution of disputes, customer escalations and debt recovery matters arising in the region, including selecting, instructing and managing external counsel to an agreed scope and budget;
  • To initiate, craft and maintain contract templates, negotiation playbooks, agreed fallback positions and self-service guidance for the business, so as to cater to evolving business needs and to reduce turnaround time on routine matters;
  • To contribute to the legal function's adoption of technology and AI tooling, including building and maintaining the structured knowledge resources and workflows on which the wider business relies;
  • To provide such other legal, compliance and corporate secretarial support as may reasonably be required from time to time.

Job Requirements:

  • Law degree (LL.B. or equivalent) or above; admission or qualification to practise in a common law jurisdiction (Singapore, Malaysia, India, the Philippines, England and Wales, or Australia) is preferred, though not essential;
  • Solid working experience of 5 to 7 years gained in a reputable law firm, an international MNC or a high-growth technology company, including at least 3 years in TMT, SaaS or PaaS, cloud, internet or other information technology business, and demonstrable hands-on ownership of compliance matters, data protection and trade sanctions in particular. Exposure to insurance, InsurTech or financial services is a strong advantage;
  • Strong drafting, negotiation and legal analytical skills;
  • Able to take a contract from first draft to signature independently, with the commercial judgement to know when to concede a point, when to hold, and when to escalate;
  • A credible communicator with commercial, product, finance and delivery stakeholders, able to give a business audience a clear answer and a recommendation rather than a survey of the law;
  • Comfortable working across multiple jurisdictions and legal traditions, and able to judge when local counsel input is genuinely required rather than instructing reflexively;
  • Excellent written and spoken English, which is the working language of the Group; an additional Asian language (Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin, Filipino, Hindi or Japanese) is an advantage;
  • Comfortable operating in a lean, remote-first team across multiple time zones, with a high degree of autonomy and limited day-to-day supervision;
  • High personal accountability with a strong sense of urgency; resilient and positive under pressure and competing deadlines;
  • Detail-conscious, outcome-oriented and a genuine team player;
  • Willing to travel regionally when needed (up to 20%);
  • Honest and high level of integrity is a must.
