An exceptional opportunity has arisen for an experienced IT Project Director to join a leading financial institution in Kuala Lumpur, where your expertise will be instrumental in shaping the future of banking technology.

IT Project Director

This role offers you the chance to work at the forefront of digital transformation, collaborating with international and local teams to deliver impactful IT projects that drive sustainable business growth. You will play a pivotal part in ensuring regulatory compliance, supporting innovation, and advising senior management on strategic IT initiatives. With a supportive hybrid working environment and direct access to decision-makers, this position is ideal for someone who thrives in a collaborative setting and is passionate about making a tangible difference within the banking sector.

  • Play a key role in driving large-scale IT projects that support the bank's long-term vision for digital excellence and operational resilience.
  • Collaborate closely with stakeholders across Malaysia, Singapore, and Tokyo, gaining exposure to regional best practices and diverse perspectives.
  • Enjoy a flexible hybrid working arrangement that supports your work-life balance while providing opportunities for professional growth and leadership development.

What you'll do:

As an IT Project Director based in Kuala Lumpur, you will be entrusted with significant responsibility for steering major technology initiatives that underpin the bank's strategic ambitions. Your day-to-day will involve close collaboration with colleagues across departments as well as international offices in Singapore and Tokyo. You will be expected to provide expert oversight on project delivery while ensuring strict adherence to regulatory frameworks such as RMiT. Your ability to communicate technical information clearly will be essential when acting as an advisor to senior management or engaging with external regulators. Success in this role requires not only deep technical knowledge but also strong interpersonal skills to foster effective teamwork among diverse stakeholders. You will have the opportunity to shape policy through your involvement in industry forums while ensuring robust controls are implemented across all vendor relationships. The hybrid working model allows you flexibility while remaining connected with your team during core office hours.

  • Oversee the end-to-end delivery of complex IT projects, ensuring alignment with business objectives and regulatory requirements throughout each project lifecycle.
  • Work collaboratively with system owners, users, and cross-functional teams both locally and internationally to ensure seamless execution of IT initiatives.
  • Supervise, track, and coordinate multiple projects simultaneously from both a Project Manager and Project Management Office perspective, maintaining high standards of quality and compliance.
  • Act as the primary contact point and business analyst to define detailed business and system requirements for new solutions or enhancements.
  • Ensure all IT projects adhere strictly to Malaysian regulations, internal policies, frameworks, and Bank Negara's Risk Management in IT (RMiT) guidelines.
  • Stay informed on emerging technologies, industry trends, IT risks, and evolving regulatory requirements to proactively address potential challenges.
  • Conduct regular assessments of ongoing projects while providing guidance and support to other IT team members to uphold regulatory standards.
  • Advise senior management and board members on all aspects of IT projects, including system development, new banking services, operations improvements, and outsourcing arrangements.
  • Monitor critical issues within projects to ensure timely escalation or resolution in line with the organisation's risk tolerance levels.
  • Oversee activities performed by outsourced service providers to guarantee deliverables meet contractual obligations and regulatory standards.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports for management and board meetings detailing project statuses, planning matters, and risk assessments.
  • Support IT planning activities such as budget control, third-party risk management processes, administrative tasks, and stakeholder engagements.

What you bring:

The ideal candidate for the IT Project Director role brings extensive experience managing multifaceted technology programmes within regulated environments-preferably banking or financial services. Your background should reflect not only technical proficiency but also a commitment to upholding rigorous compliance standards. You are adept at building consensus among diverse groups including internal teams, vendors, regulators, and executive leadership. Your approach is grounded in empathy and collaboration; you value open communication channels that foster trust across all levels of the organisation. In addition to your technical credentials-such as relevant degrees or certifications-you possess strong organisational skills that allow you to juggle competing priorities without compromising on quality or timelines. Your previous roles have equipped you with insights into industry best practices which you now leverage when advising others or shaping policy decisions. Above all else, your dedication to continuous learning ensures you remain current on technological advancements while championing responsible innovation.

  • A bachelor's degree in Information Technology or a related field is required for this position along with relevant certifications in IT project management.
  • At least 15 years of professional experience including 10 years of proven expertise managing large-scale IT projects within complex organisations.
  • Demonstrated experience working within banking or financial institutions; prior support for corporate banking, treasury or transactional banking businesses is highly advantageous.
  • In-depth understanding of Malaysian regulatory requirements including hands-on experience implementing Bank Negara's Risk Management in IT (RMiT) framework.
  • Exceptional problem-solving abilities combined with analytical thinking skills that enable you to navigate complex project challenges effectively.
  • Outstanding communication skills enabling you to translate technical concepts into clear recommendations for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proven ability to collaborate across departments while demonstrating ownership over outcomes; adaptability is considered a valuable asset.
  • Experience supervising outsourced service providers ensuring deliverables meet agreed standards under strict compliance conditions.
  • Track record preparing detailed reports for senior management or board-level audiences covering project status updates and risk assessments.
  • Familiarity with third-party risk management processes as well as budgetary control within an IT planning context.
