We're looking for a Mid Lookdev Artist to help shape the visual look of our projects in Unreal Engine 5. You'll be responsible for shaping the visual quality and artistic identity of scenes through material development and shading. With a focus on translating concept art and style guides into production-ready, real-time materials and textures, your role is central to achieving the project's visual vision while maintaining real-time rendering performance and consistency across shots and environments.
Responsibilities
- Interpret style guides, concept art, and visual references to create production-ready materials, textures, and shaders in UE5.
- Develop and maintain master materials, material instances, and dynamic material systems for real-time rendering.
- Validate materials and textures under different lighting conditions to ensure consistency across shots and environments.
- Optimize materials and shaders to balance visual quality with real-time rendering performance, managing shader complexity.
- Collaborate closely with the Lookdev Lead, Asset Team, CG Supervisor, and Directors to achieve the project's visual quality and style goals.
- Support asset integration and troubleshoot material, rendering, and visual fidelity issues within Unreal Engine.
- Maintain asset continuity and lookdev integrity across shots, environments, and lighting scenarios throughout the production pipeline.
- Contribute to look development workflows, material libraries, and production best practices.
- Support dynamic or interactive material setups using the Unreal Blueprint system and Niagara VFX framework.
Requirements
- Minimum 3 years of professional experience in look development, surfacing, texturing, or material creation for animation, games, VFX, or real-time productions.
- Strong portfolio or cinematic demo reel demonstrating look development, texturing, surfacing, shading, and material creation expertise.
- Strong artistic eye with the ability to interpret and execute diverse visual styles and aesthetic directions across cinematic projects.
- Solid understanding of PBR workflows, material properties, and shading principles.
- Advanced proficiency in Unreal Engine 5, Autodesk Maya, Substance Painter, and Adobe Photoshop.
- Strong understanding of color management, color spaces, UE5's Material Editor, and Lumen global illumination/lighting dynamics.
- Understanding of shader optimization and real-time rendering performance considerations.
- Working knowledge of Unreal Engine Blueprint systems and Niagara to support dynamic or interactive material workflows.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
