Data Centre Day Shift Maintenance Engineer
Position Overview
The Data Centre Maintenance Engineer is responsible for ensuring the reliable operation, maintenance, and performance of critical infrastructure systems within a data centre facility during day shift hours. This role requires hands-on technical expertise and proactive maintenance to minimize downtime and maintain optimal operating conditions.
Key Responsibilities
Critical Infrastructure Maintenance Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on critical data centre systems including UPS systems, generators, CRAC/CRAH units, chillers, cooling towers, PDUs, power distribution systems, fire suppression systems, and building management systems (BMS). Conduct regular inspections, testing, and monitoring to ensure all systems operate within specified parameters.
Operational Support Monitor and respond to alarms and alerts from building management systems. Execute operational procedures including equipment start-up, shutdown, and changeover activities. Maintain accurate logs of all maintenance activities, system readings, and incidents. Support capacity planning by tracking infrastructure utilization and performance metrics.
Troubleshooting and Problem Resolution Diagnose and resolve equipment failures and performance issues quickly to minimize impact on critical systems. Coordinate with vendors and third-party service providers for specialized repairs and warranty work. Participate in root cause analysis for incidents and implement corrective actions.
Compliance and Documentation Ensure all maintenance activities comply with manufacturer specifications, industry standards, and internal procedures. Maintain comprehensive documentation including maintenance records, equipment histories, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and safety protocols. Support regulatory inspections and audits.
Safety and Risk Management Follow all safety procedures including lockout/tagout (LOTO), hot work permits, and confined space entry protocols. Identify and report potential safety hazards or equipment concerns. Participate in emergency response procedures and business continuity exercises.
Required Qualifications
Education and Certifications Relevant technical qualification in electrical, mechanical, or facilities engineering (HND, ONC, or equivalent). Desirable certifications include electrical qualifications (18th Edition wiring regulations), HVAC certifications, or data centre-specific training (CDCP, CDCE).
Experience Minimum 2-3 years of maintenance experience in critical environments such as data centres, hospitals, pharmaceutical facilities, or similar 24/7 operations. Demonstrated experience with UPS systems, generators, HVAC systems, and electrical distribution at medium voltage levels.
Technical Skills Strong electrical and mechanical aptitude with ability to read technical drawings, schematics, and P&IDs. Proficiency with building management systems and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS). Understanding of redundancy concepts (N, N+1, 2N) and data centre tier classifications.
Competencies Excellent problem-solving skills with ability to work under pressure during critical situations. Strong attention to detail and commitment to following procedures. Good communication skills for coordinating with operations teams, vendors, and stakeholders. Flexibility to provide occasional out-of-hours support during emergencies or planned maintenance windows.
Working Conditions
Standard day-shift hours Monday through Friday, with occasional evening or weekend work for planned maintenance activities. Work performed in data centre environments with exposure to varying temperatures, noise levels, and requirement for PPE. Physical requirements include ability to lift equipment, work at heights, and access confined spaces.
