Role Overview
The Senior Commissioning Engineer (Water & Wastewater) is responsible for leading and executing commissioning activities throughout the complete project lifecycle for industrial and municipal water and wastewater treatment systems. The role covers pre-commissioning, wet commissioning, process commissioning, startup, performance testing, troubleshooting, client handover, and post-commissioning support to ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project requirements.

- Sewage Treatment Plants (STP)
- Water Treatment Plants (WTP)
- Reverse Osmosis (RO)
- Ultrafiltration (UF)
- Desalination Systems
- Utility Water Systems
- Other advanced water and wastewater treatment technologies
This is primarily a site-based project role and requires both domestic and international travel to support commissioning activities across Gradiant project sites.
Key Responsibilities
Commissioning & Startup
- Lead and execute commissioning activities for industrial and municipal water and wastewater treatment projects.
- Plan and coordinate all commissioning phases, including:
- Pre-Commissioning
- Wet Commissioning
- Process Commissioning
- Startup
- Performance Testing
- Client Handover
- Post-Commissioning Support
- Perform equipment testing, troubleshooting, process optimization, and operational readiness verification.
- Support Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), Performance Tests, and client acceptance activities.
- Manage commissioning punch lists and ensure timely closure.
- Provide technical support during plant startup and stabilization.
Engineering & Documentation
- Review engineering documents including:
- P&IDs
- PFDs
- Design Basis
- Mass Balance
- Control Philosophy
- Cause & Effect Matrix
- Technical Specifications
- Prepare and review:
- Commissioning Plans
- Commissioning Procedures
- Checklists
- SOPs
- O&M Manuals
- Performance Test Procedures
- Commissioning Reports
- Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly commissioning progress reports.
Technical Support & Troubleshooting
- Troubleshoot process, mechanical, piping, instrumentation, electrical, and control system issues during commissioning and startup.
- Analyse plant operating data and recommend corrective actions to optimize plant performance.
- Work closely with Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Controls, and Process Engineering teams to resolve technical issues.
- Identify equipment, installation, and operational issues and recommend practical engineering solutions.
Project Support
- Coordinate with Project, Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Vendors, and Operations teams throughout project execution.
- Participate in technical discussions, inspections, client meetings, and project handover sessions.
- Ensure commissioning activities are executed safely and according to project schedules.
- Support project close-out documentation and final handover activities.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, or related engineering disciplines.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in commissioning, startup, operations, maintenance, or project execution within water & wastewater, utilities, petrochemical, oil & gas, power generation, or other process industries.
- Hands-on experience in commissioning, startup, troubleshooting, or operation of water-related process systems is preferred.
- Experience with industrial or municipal water and wastewater treatment systems will be an advantage.
- Familiarity with commissioning activities including system testing, startup, troubleshooting, performance testing, plant handover, and process optimisation.
- Ability to interpret engineering documents including P&IDs, PFDs, Control Philosophy, Cause & Effect Matrix, and technical specifications.
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Experience working with multidisciplinary Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation & Control (ME&I) teams.
- Proficient in Mandarin (spoken and written) to effectively communicate with Mandarin-speaking clients, contractors, vendors, and site personnel, as well as support project deployments across Greater China and Taiwan.
- Willingness to travel extensively, both locally and internationally, based on project requirements.
