About the Job

Skilled and experienced Senior Database Administrator responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance, and performance of various database systems. This role requires a proactive individual who has in-depth experience and expertise with exposure in large scale, high impact and complex projects to ensure the security, availability, and integrity of our databases.

  • Day-to-Day Activities: Fulfill service tickets assigned by the DBA Lead. Plan and coordinate service requests with stakeholders, including application, infrastructure, security, service providers, and others. Handle necessary service request tickets for both BAU and projects. Provide build and BAU support for various databases, including Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, MariaDB, Yugabyte, and PostgreSQL. Familiarity with ExaCC and management consoles like OEM and OCI is necessary. Exposure to Exadata and other Oracle technologies, such as Oracle Business Suites, is required. Ensure timely closure of all service requests and compliance with change management processes. Respond to, support, and resolve after-hours project activities or incident tickets as necessary.
  • Guide other DBAs in handling more complex tickets.
  • Database Design and Implementation: Create and maintain database structures to store and organize data efficiently as required by the respective applications, based on provided scripts and structure information. Evaluate and identify opportunities for automation during the design phase. Ensure that database best practices are integrated into the various types of databases within the environment.
  • Performance Monitoring and Optimization: Collaborate with other DBAs to understand various database performance trends, identify bottlenecks, and plan necessary adjustments to ensure optimal performance. Guide the DBAs in executing the planned optimizations. Use available tools to run diagnostics and address potential performance issues. Plan periodic tuning exercises with the respective application teams.
  • DB Recovery including Disaster Recovery: Develop and implement recovery plans to protect data from loss or corruption and address any recovery-related requests.
  • Security Management: Ensure data security by implementing access controls, encryption, and other security measures to protect sensitive information, including periodic hardenings for databases. Decide which patches are suitable for the environment, ensure proper installation of patches, conduct system testing after installation, and complete all relevant documentation.
  • Database Maintenance: Perform regular and advanced maintenance tasks such as updating database software, applying patches, and optimizing database configurations including advanced tuning like optimizer hints, partitioning, RAC tuning along with AWR and any advisory reports. Evaluate and determine the necessity of non-security patches.
  • Incident Support: Provide L2 support to users by troubleshooting database-related issues, adhering to system criticality-based recovery timelines, and assisting with queries.
  • Capacity Planning: Plan for future database growth and ensure the infrastructure can handle increased data loads. Collaborate with various teams, including application, solution architects, service management, and project teams, to ensure optimal capacity availability in the system. Work closely with Lead to proactively provide database capacity statistics to plan for immediate and long-term capacity planning.
  • Compliance and Auditing: Ensure databases comply with relevant regulations and standards and step in to front the required internal and external audits by assisting the Lead to maintain compliance.
  • Participation in Various Forums: Actively participate in meetings that require L2 DBA input. Plan and present DBA BAU activities to relevant stakeholders.
  • Documentation: Maintain comprehensive documentation of database configurations, procedures, and policies.
  • Takes accountability in considering business and regulatory compliance risks and takes appropriate steps to mitigate the risks.
  • Maintains awareness of industry trends on regulatory compliance, emerging threats and technologies in order to understand the risk and better safeguard the company.
  • Highlights any potential concerns /risks and proactively shares best risk management practices.

We are looking for people with

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field. Certification in database administration, especially Oracle Certified Professional (OCP). MySQL DBA Certification or Microsoft certification is an added advantage.
  • Proven experience as a Senior Database Administrator or in a similar role.
  • In-depth knowledge of database management systems (DBMS), such as Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, DB2, Yugabyte, PostgreSQL, and MariaDB.
  • Strong understanding of database design, implementation, and maintenance.
  • Advanced proficiency in database performance tuning and optimization.
  • Experience with backup and recovery strategies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of data security and encryption techniques including data masking.
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team including guiding other DBAs as required.
  • Proficiency in SQL and database query languages.
  • Good understanding of cloud-based database solutions (e.g., AWS RDS, Azure SQL Database).
  • Hand on experience with database migration tools, techniques, complex migrations and upgrades, including cross environment migration.
  • Sound knowledge of scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash) for automation.
  • Deep understanding on database monitoring and management tools.
  • Experienced in using Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) for Exadata Cloud at Customer (ExaCC).
