Job Description: Senior / Design Manager - Electrical (Data Centers)
Role Overview
The client is seeking an experienced Senior / Design Manager - Electrical to lead the end-to-end electrical design, contractual delivery, and implementation of hyperscale data center projects. This role is responsible for ensuring that all electrical systems are designed, procured, and delivered in accordance with project specifications, commercial agreements, and operational requirements.
The ideal candidate combines technical electrical expertise, design leadership, and project delivery experience within mission-critical environments.
Key Responsibilities
1. Electrical Design Leadership
- Lead the concept, schematic, and detailed design of electrical systems for data centers, including:
- HV/MV/LV distribution systems
- UPS systems and battery technologies
- Backup generation (diesel generators, fuel systems)
- Power distribution (PDUs, RPPs, busways)
- Grounding and lightning protection
- Ensure designs achieve high availability standards (e.g., Tier III / Tier IV, N+1, 2N configurations)
- Manage and review deliverables from consultants, engineers, and contractors
- Ensure compliance with:
- Local codes and regulations
- International standards (IEC, IEEE, NFPA, etc.)
- Client specifications and data center best practices
- Lead design coordination across disciplines (MEP, civil, structural, architecture)
2. Contractual & Commercial Management
- Review and manage engineering contracts, including:
- Design consultancy agreements
- EPC / design-and-build contracts
- Ensure technical compliance with:
- Employer's Requirements (ERs)
- Specifications and performance criteria
- Support procurement activities:
- Technical tender evaluations
- Vendor selection and bid analysis
- Identify and manage:
- Technical risks and contractual risks
- Value engineering opportunities
- Support commercial teams in variation orders, claims, and change management
3. Project Delivery & Implementation
- Oversee the execution of electrical works from design through construction, commissioning, and handover
- Coordinate with:
- Contractors, subcontractors, vendors, and internal teams
- Ensure timely delivery aligned with:
- Project schedule
- Quality standards
- Budget constraints
- Lead site inspections, FAT/SAT reviews, and testing & commissioning activities
- Ensure proper integration of critical systems:
- Electrical with mechanical (cooling systems)
- Controls and BMS/EPMS/SCADA systems
- Monitor progress and resolve design or construction issues proactively
4. Commissioning & Operational Readiness
- Oversee electrical commissioning strategy, including:
- Integrated Systems Testing (IST)
- Load bank testing
- Black-building tests
- Ensure systems meet performance criteria (availability, redundancy, resilience)
- Support handover to operations teams:
- Documentation review
- Training and knowledge transfer
5. Governance, Risk & Compliance
- Ensure adherence to health, safety, and environmental (HSE) standards
- Manage design risks and implement mitigation strategies
- Maintain proper documentation and audit-ready project records
- Ensure alignment with sustainability and energy efficiency targets
Qualifications & Experience
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering (Master's preferred)
- Professional certification (e.g., PE, CEng) is an advantage
Experience
- 10-15+ years of experience in electrical engineering, with at least:
- 5+ years in data center or mission-critical environments
- Proven experience in:
- Design management of large-scale data center projects
- EPC or design-and-build delivery models
- High voltage and critical power systems
- Experience with hyperscale data centers is highly preferred
