Job Description

Job Summary

The Senior Chemist is responsible for formulation development, research, and continuous improvement of premix and construction chemical products. This role is hands-on and technical, with responsibility to guide junior chemists and support laboratory activities. The position focuses on improving existing products, developing new formulations, and supporting production and quality requirements for the Malaysian construction market.

Key Responsibilities

Research & Formulation Development

  • Develop and improve formulations for:

a) Dry premix products (tile adhesives, skim coats, plasters, grouts, repair mortars, etc.)

b) Construction chemicals (waterproofing systems, bonding agents, admixtures, sealers, etc.)

  • Conduct laboratory trials, testing, and formulation optimization
  • Evaluate raw materials and alternative sources suitable for local supply in Malaysia
  • Support new product development from lab scale to production trial

Product Improvement & Technical Support

  • Improve existing formulations for consistency, performance, and cost efficiency
  • Assist in troubleshooting product performance issues from production or site feedback
  • Support production during scale-up, plant trials, and process improvements

Laboratory & Team Support

  • Guide and support junior chemists and lab technicians in daily R&D activities
  • Assist in setting up testing methods and basic laboratory procedures
  • Review test results and ensure proper documentation of formulations and trials

Testing, Quality & Compliance

  • Carry out and support testing according to relevant standards (ASTM, EN, BS, MS, or equivalent)
  • Work closely with Quality and Production teams to resolve technical issues
  • Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory requirements

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Provide technical input to Sales, Technical Service, and Marketing teams when required
  • Support preparation of technical data sheets and product documentation

Qualifications & Experience

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field

Experience

  • Minimum 68 years of experience in:

a) Construction chemicals and/or dry premix industry

b) Product formulation and applied R&D

  • Experience working with cementitious systems and construction materials
  • Exposure to guiding junior staff or laboratory teams is an advantage

Technical Skills

  • Strong understanding of:

a) Cement-based formulations and mortar systems

b) Polymers, additives, fillers, and admixtures

  • Hands-on laboratory and formulation development skills
  • Good problem-solving and analytical capability

  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Willing to share knowledge and support team development
  • Good communication skills and teamwork attitude
