What's The Role

The Senior System Assurance Engineer plays a technical and leadership role, driving a strong SMDS culture while ensuring best‑in‑class performance at the world's leading Gas‑to‑Liquids specialties facility. The role is responsible for providing technical assurance and systems engineering expertise across the lifecycle of Shell MDS control systems, ensuring safe, reliable, and compliant operations. This includes supporting maintenance strategies, system modifications, OT security compliance, and industry standards, as well as contributing to site leadership, capability development, and technical coaching.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Designated Site Process Focal Point (SPFP) for OT Security and deliver all roles and responsibilities outlined for the SPFP.
  • Develop and execute strategies to maintain OT security and integrity, always ensuring compliance with Operation Technology (OT) requirements.
  • Custodian/focal point for Short Term (ST) and Long Term (LT) MTO System related items.
  • Provide technical assurance for Yokogawa Centum VP (40 FCS), Honeywell FSC (28), Siemens PCS7 (1), Siemens S7 (4) and various Machinery Protection Systems (System-1, BN3500 & Woodward).
  • Provide support to root cause investigations and on any System Assurance issues.
  • Review and continuously improve existing and new procedures under system assurance – e.g. those related to long term strategies such as obsolescence management plan, 10-year DCS management plan etc. Responsible for ensuring all technical assurance documentation are of high quality, reviewed timely and that procedure users are fully aligned and comply to procedural requirements outlined. At times, required to develop, review and execute ad-hoc procedures for specific challenges faced to ensure integrity and availability of systems are not compromised in the course of the required work.
  • For MOC, the 2 main roles of the Senor System Assurance Engineer are:
    • Pre-discussion on concept, ideas etc
    • Review the design part which is done by the System's Assurance Engineer
  • To provide troubleshooting as a second line, after System Maintenance i.e. System Maintenance will consult System Assurance for items that need assistance in resolving.
  • Provide technical expertise and assurance in ensuring control and automation systems, equipment faults, defects and alarms are detected, investigated and resolved in a safe, incident free and timely manner in collaboration with PACO discipline engineers, Production, other Technology teams such as Process Engineering, Process Safety, IT and Maintenance Instrumentation Teams. This includes prioritization of assurance and implementing continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Review the control system content of plant modifications and instrument trip/alarm settings change to ensure that plant integrity is not compromised, and that design objectives and regulatory standards are met.
  • Represent Shell MDS and provide Quality Assurance on work delivered by Control Systems vendors, vendor software and hardware during Run & Maintain, plant changes and projects. This includes providing technical assurance in Factory Acceptance Testing, Site Acceptance Testing and overall coordination of work required to implement the modifications. Where appropriate, carry out and obtain approval for designs to modify systems.
  • Provides technical coaching and supports competence development of discipline graduates and MTAC Instrument technicians (FLBM Assessor).
  • Sustain high levels of awareness in Instrumented Protective Function and control systems hardware, software and strategy improvements within the industry and group to enable replication and unlock value for Shell MDS.
  • Uphold Engineering Vision and Purpose, as well as ensuring people work in accordance to their pre-defined competence standards.
  • Provide support to Leadership and delivery of the Site Governance Element of Goal Zero, People, Reliability, Innovation, Cost, Projects & Turnaround.
  • Undertake special assignments or tasks as directed by the Instrumentation Manager.
What You Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline (or equivalent) with 10+ years of experience in the oil & gas industry.
  • Experience in instrumentation, process control and automation, control systems, or electrical/electronic engineering, including design, troubleshooting, maintenance, or assurance within a manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge or experience in maintaining and assuring control systems from vendors such as Yokogawa, Honeywell, or Siemens is highly valued.
  • Experience leading and executing SEAM processes, as well as structured problem‑solving using Root Cause Analysis or Causal Learning methodologies, is an advantage.
  • Demonstrated ability in coaching, collaboration, and effective communication.
  • Experience with IoT or wireless communication technologies is desirable.
  • Proactive team player with strong networking skills; able to engage operations and technology personnel, including large groups, and clearly explain system concepts.
  • Willingness to relocate and work in Bintulu, Sarawak is required.
