Job Purpose
The Head of Unit, Taxation is responsible for leading and managing the overall tax function to ensure full compliance with statutory tax requirements, optimize tax efficiency, and provide strategic tax advisory support to the business. This role oversees all direct and indirect tax matters while acting as the key liaison with tax authorities, auditors, and external consultants.
Key Responsibilities
1. Tax Compliance & Reporting
- Oversee and ensure timely and accurate submission of all statutory tax filings, including:
- Corporate Income Tax
- SST / GST (where applicable)
- Stamp Duty
- Other relevant statutory tax filings and declarations
- Review tax computations, schedules, and supporting documentation prepared by the team.
- Ensure full compliance with the Income Tax Act, SST Act, Stamp Duty Act, and other relevant tax regulations and legislation.
2. Tax Planning & Advisory
- Develop and implement effective tax planning strategies to optimize the Group's tax position while ensuring regulatory compliance.
- Provide tax advisory support to management on business transactions, restructuring exercises, contracts, and new business initiatives.
- Identify potential tax risks and recommend appropriate mitigation strategies.
3. Tax Audit & Regulatory Liaison
- Act as the primary liaison with tax authorities such as LHDN and RMCD.
- Lead and manage tax audits, investigations, and queries from relevant authorities.
- Coordinate responses, prepare supporting documentation, and manage negotiations or settlements when required.
4. Team Leadership & Management
- Lead, mentor, and manage the Tax Unit by providing technical guidance, coaching, and support to team members.
- Review team deliverables to ensure accuracy, completeness, and adherence to deadlines.
- Support staff development initiatives and encourage continuous knowledge sharing within the department.
5. Policies, Processes & Governance
- Support the HOD / Deputy HOD in departmental planning, workflow improvements, and target setting.
- Establish, review, and enhance tax policies, SOPs, and internal controls to strengthen tax governance and compliance.
- Ensure proper documentation and record retention for all tax-related matters.
- Keep abreast of updates in tax laws and regulations and assess their impact on business operations.
6. Stakeholder & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Collaborate closely with Finance, Accounting, HR, and other departments to ensure tax matters are appropriately addressed.
- Support external auditors on all tax-related matters during annual audits.
- Coordinate with external tax consultants and review the quality and accuracy of their deliverables.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline.
- Professional qualification such as ACCA, CPA, CA, or equivalent is mandatory.
- Minimum 6 years of progressive experience in finance, accounting, or auditing, with at least 3 years of hands-on taxation experience including managerial or supervisory responsibilities.
- Strong practical experience in Malaysian taxation; exposure to group or corporate tax environment will be an added advantage.
- In-depth knowledge of Malaysian tax regulations and compliance requirements.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel and financial reporting tools.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and advisory capabilities.
- Good leadership, interpersonal, and stakeholder management skills.
- High level of integrity, attention to detail, and ability to work under tight deadlines.
