Job Brief

The Underwriter, Marine & Liability is responsible for underwriting and managing a profitable portfolio in line with the Company's strategies and risk appetite. The role involves assessing and pricing risks, providing technical support to partners, and ensuring compliance with the Company's Underwriting and Treaty Guidelines.

The incumbent will strengthen relationships with agents, brokers, and reinsurers, support business development initiatives, and contribute to portfolio growth through effective underwriting and collaboration across teams.

Job Responsibilities

  • Ensure all underwriting activities comply with the Company's Underwriting and Treaty Guidelines, internal policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide timely, accurate, and competitive quotations as well as technical support to Marketers, Agents, Brokers, and other Distribution Partners.
  • Engage in Market Underwriting, including meetings and negotiations with Distribution Partners to secure and retain profitable business.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with professional reinsurers, securing appropriate support for Specialized Marine and Liability Classes of business.
  • Determine appropriate retention levels in accordance with the Company's Underwriting and Treaty Guidelines.
  • Ensure reinsurance placement is completed and documented before risk inception.
  • Formulate and execute a Business Growth Plan for the assigned portfolio, ensuring alignment with company objectives and growth targets.
  • Explore and develop new business opportunities, particularly within digital ecosystems and emerging platforms.
  • Conduct portfolio management by analysing Marine and Liability performance metrics (e.g., loss ratio, claims frequency and severity), identifying trends, and implementing corrective measures where necessary.
  • Provide technical advice and support on underwriting matters to Marketers, Agents, Brokers, and other Partners.
  • Provide technical training to identified key Sales colleagues.
  • Contribute to product development and enhancement, sharing insights on underwriting practices, market trends, and customer needs.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by embracing and sharing Product, System, and Process knowledge.
  • Ensure all referrals from Marketers, Agents, Brokers, and other Partners are attended to in a timely manner.
  • Analyse Claims Frequency and Severity within the respective Portfolio to take the respective action where necessary.
  • Participate in User Acceptance Testing (UAT) and system implementation activities to ensure underwriting systems and tools function effectively and align with business requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with Claims, Reinsurance, and Product teams to maintain portfolio profitability and sound underwriting discipline.
  • Perform any other duties or special projects as assigned by the immediate superior

Job Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Insurance, Risk Management, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field. Professional insurance qualifications (e.g. ACII, AMII, ANZIIF) will be an added advantage.
  • Experience: Minimum 25 years of underwriting experience, preferably in Marine, Liability, or Commercial Lines.
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of Marine Cargo and Liability insurance products, underwriting principles, reinsurance arrangements, and relevant regulatory frameworks.
  • Analytical Skills: Proficient in risk assessment, data analysis, and portfolio performance evaluation to ensure sound underwriting decisions.
  • Communication & Relationship Management: Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and presentation skills to build and maintain effective relationships with agents, brokers, and reinsurers.
  • System Knowledge: Familiarity with system migration, implementation, and UAT processes will be an added advantage.
  • Teamwork & Collaboration: Able to work effectively in a team-oriented environment and collaborate with cross-functional departments.
  • Professionalism: Detail-oriented, self-motivated, and able to manage multiple priorities while maintaining high standards of accuracy and compliance.
