Maintenance Engineer is responsible for ensuring high equipment availability, safe operation, and reliable performance of back-end semiconductor production equipment (FOL Assy and EOL Assy, Die Attach, Wire Bond, Mold, Crop). The role coordinate corrective and preventive maintenance, leads root-cause analysis for repeat failures, coordinates vendor repairs and upgrades, and works with production and process engineering to improve equipment reliability and yield.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform troubleshooting, diagnosis and repair of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic/hydraulic and control systems for production equipment.
- Execute preventive maintenance (PM) schedules and predictive maintenance activities to minimize unplanned downtime.
- Rapidly respond to equipment breakdowns, lead equipment recovery activities and document repair actions and parts used.
- Interface with equipment vendors for escalations, spares, onsite repairs, retrofits and upgrades; manage service calls and follow up until closure.
- Support equipment installation, qualification, changeovers and new machine commissioning during production ramps.
- Perform root cause analysis (RCA) for recurring failures, implement corrective & preventive actions (CAPA) and track reliability KPIs (MTBF, MTTR, OEE).
- Collaborate with Production, Process, Quality and Engineering teams to optimize equipment/process interface and ensure product yield and quality goals.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, BOM for critical spares, and contribute to continuous improvement and Lean initiatives.
- Adhere strictly to cleanroom protocols, EHS and safety procedures applicable to semiconductor back-end operations.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical / Electrical / Mechatronics / Electronics / Industrial Engineering or equivalent.
- 25 years (or more depending on level) hands-on maintenance experience in semiconductor back-end, electronics manufacturing, or similar high-mix automated production environment.
- Strong skills in mechanical & electrical troubleshooting, PLCs, servo systems, pneumatics, sensors, and motion control.
- Experience with Front of line and End of Line assembly equipment is an advantage.
- Ability to read electrical/mechanical drawings, use multimeter/oscilloscope and perform component-level fault isolation.
- Familiarity with preventive maintenance systems, CMMS and spare parts management.
Desired Skills & Attributes
- Strong analytical mindset and structured RCA skills (5-Why, fishbone).
- Good communication skills; able to work cross-functionally and liaise with vendors.
- Willingness to work in on-call support for breakdowns. (common in 24/7 production facilities)
- Self-starter who documents work thoroughly and drives continuous improvement.
Typical reporting & work conditions
- Reports to: Head of department / Operation Manager.
- Work environment: Cleanroom / Class-controlled areas requires compliance to gowning and contamination control procedures; exposure to automated equipment, moving parts and electrical systems.
