Job Description
The General Ledger role is responsible for managing and maintaining accurate and timely accounting records, overseeing General Ledger activities, and supporting month-end and year-end closing processes. The role will be responsible for preparing financial reports, performing account reconciliations, analysing financial results, and ensuring compliance with applicable accounting standards, statutory requirements, and internal policies.
The position will work closely with internal stakeholders, auditors, tax agents, and Group/Regional Finance teams to ensure accurate financial reporting and timely completion of accounting and reporting requirements. The role will also support budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, internal controls, and continuous improvement of finance processes and systems.
Responsibilities
1. General Ledger & Accounting
- Manage the full spectrum of General Ledger (GL) activities, ensuring all financial transactions are accurately and timely recorded.
- Review, verify, and post journal entries, including accruals, prepayments, provisions, depreciation, reclassifications, and other adjustment entries.
- Ensure proper classification and allocation of income, expenses, assets, and liabilities to the appropriate accounts and cost centres.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date accounting records in accordance with applicable accounting standards and company policies.
- Monitor and clear outstanding and unusual GL items on a timely basis.
2. Month-End & Year-End Closing
- Coordinate and perform month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing activities in accordance with the established closing timetable.
- Prepare and review month-end journals, accruals, provisions, prepayments, depreciation, and other closing adjustments.
- Perform balance sheet account reconciliations and ensure reconciling items are investigated and resolved promptly.
- Review the completeness and accuracy of financial information before closing the accounting period.
- Support the preparation of year-end closing schedules and statutory accounts.
3. Financial Reporting
- Prepare monthly financial reports and management reports, including Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow, and other financial schedules.
- Analyse financial results against budget, forecast, and prior periods, and highlight significant variances and trends.
- Provide financial information and analysis to management to support business and financial decision-making.
- Prepare financial schedules and supporting reports for management review.
- Ensure financial reports are accurate, complete, and submitted within the required deadlines.
4. Account Reconciliation
- Perform regular reconciliation of balance sheet and other key accounts, including bank accounts, intercompany balances, accruals, prepayments, fixed assets, and other relevant accounts.
- Investigate discrepancies and ensure outstanding reconciling items are followed up and resolved promptly.
- Maintain proper supporting documentation for all reconciliations and accounting adjustments.
5. Intercompany & Group Accounting
- Manage intercompany transactions and ensure balances are accurately recorded and reconciled between related entities.
- Coordinate with other business units and finance teams to resolve intercompany discrepancies and ensure timely month-end closing.
- Prepare and maintain intercompany schedules and supporting documentation.
- Ensure intercompany transactions comply with Group accounting policies and established procedures.
6. Budgeting & Forecasting
- Support the preparation of annual budgets, financial forecasts, and periodic reforecasts.
- Analyse actual results against budget and forecast, identify significant variances, and provide explanations to management.
- Assist in preparing financial projections and other financial analysis as required.
7. Audit & Compliance
- Support internal and external audits by preparing audit schedules, supporting documents, reconciliations, and other information requested by auditors.
- Liaise with auditors and relevant internal stakeholders to address audit queries and follow up on audit findings.
- Ensure accounting records and financial reporting comply with applicable accounting standards, statutory requirements, Group policies, and internal controls.
- Maintain proper documentation and audit trails for financial transactions.
8. Tax & Statutory Support
- Assist in providing financial information and supporting schedules required for tax computation, statutory reporting, and other regulatory submissions.
- Liaise with tax agents, auditors, and relevant parties on accounting and financial matters when required.
- Ensure required accounting records and supporting documents are maintained in accordance with statutory and regulatory requirements.
9. Fixed Assets & Other Accounting Areas
- Maintain and monitor the fixed asset register, including additions, disposals, transfers, depreciation, and impairment where applicable.
- Review fixed asset balances and ensure transactions are properly recorded and supported.
- Support other accounting areas and financial activities as assigned by the Finance Manager or Head of Finance.
10. Internal Controls & Process Improvement
- Ensure compliance with established finance policies, procedures, approval processes, and internal controls.
- Identify control gaps, accounting issues, and process inefficiencies and recommend appropriate improvements.
- Participate in finance system enhancements, process automation, and other initiatives to improve efficiency and accuracy.
- Ensure proper segregation of duties and adherence to financial control requirements.
11. Stakeholder Management
- Work closely with Finance, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Treasury, Tax, Operations, and other business functions to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.
- Provide accounting support and guidance to internal stakeholders on financial and accounting matters.
- Coordinate with regional or Group Finance teams on reporting requirements, accounting matters, and financial information.
- Respond to ad hoc financial and accounting queries from management and internal stakeholders.
12. Other Responsibilities
- Assist in the preparation of financial analysis, management presentations, and ad hoc reports as required.
- Support finance projects, system implementations, process improvements, and other initiatives.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Finance Manager, Head of Finance, or Management.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
- Professional accounting qualification such as ACCA, CPA, CIMA, or equivalent will be an added advantage.
- Minimum 3–5 years of relevant experience in General Ledger, financial reporting, or full-set accounting, preferably within a multinational or corporate environment.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting, and month-end/year-end closing processes.
- Good understanding of applicable accounting standards, statutory requirements, and internal controls.
- Hands-on experience in preparing financial statements, management reports, and account reconciliations.
- Experience in handling intercompany transactions and reconciliations is preferred.
- Experience in budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis will be an advantage.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel, including functions such as PivotTables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and other financial analysis tools.
