About the Role
The Assistant Manager, Group Tax manages tax compliance and advisory matters across the Group to ensure adherence to tax laws, regulations, and statutory deadlines. This role covers direct and indirect taxes, foreign tax matters, management fees, transfer pricing, tax audits, and regulatory requirements, including accurate tax provisions and deferred tax computations. It supports effective tax governance through sound internal controls, audit readiness, and continuous process improvement, while working closely with internal stakeholders, external tax agents, and tax authorities. The role also supports tax audits, incentive applications, and training initiatives to promote consistent and compliant tax practices across the organization.
Responsibilities
Tax Computations and Returns
- Prepare/ review tax computations, returns, worksheets, and appendices for the Group to ensure full compliance with tax laws, regulations, and public rulings.
- Coordinate the preparation of initial and revised tax estimates for companies within the group.
- Apply for the refund and/or offsetting of tax credits in a timely manner.
- Prepare deferred tax computations and review tax provisions of subsidiaries on a quarterly basis to ensure accuracy.
- Prepare/ review personal income tax computations for expatriates, obtaining tax clearance and tax credit refunds.
Foreign tax
- Review the tax returns (withholding tax and VAT) for Thailand contract.
- Monitor tax payment and ensure adherence to statutory deadlines.
Management Fees and Tax Provisions
- Review management fee charges to subsidiaries.
- Review tax provisions of subsidiaries on a quarterly basis to ensure accuracy.
- Review deferred tax computations on a half-yearly basis.
Indirect Taxes Compliance
- Manage compliance with indirect taxes, including withholding tax, Sales & Service Tax, and Importation Service Tax, to ensure zero penalties.
- Review computations for Malaysian withholding tax purposes.
Tax Audits and Incentives
- Assist in tax audits by providing any information requested by the Inland Revenue Board (IRB).
- Assist in the application of relevant tax incentives.
- Review the information required by external tax agents for corporate income tax matters.
Transfer Pricing
- Prepare and review the completeness of transfer pricing documentation.
- Review the preparation of transfer pricing documentation as necessary.
Audit & Regulatory Support
- Prepare responses and manage communications related to tax audits, assessments, and notices.
- Support tax litigation or appeal processes in coordination with legal counsel or external advisors.
- Ensure all compliance-related documentation is accurate, well-maintained, and audit-ready.
- Manage relationships with tax authorities as needed during audits or inquiries.
Internal Controls & Process Improvement
- Assist to develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for tax compliance processes.
- Identify opportunities to improve accuracy, efficiency, and automation in tax reporting.
- Ensure appropriate internal controls are in place and aligned with group policy and external regulatory requirements.
- Assist in implementing and optimizing tax compliance tools and ERP system enhancements.
Collaboration & Reporting
- Provide regular updates to the Manager and Senior Manager on tax positions, filing status, and emerging compliance issues.
- Collaborate with finance, accounts payable, and legal teams to ensure integrated compliance processes.
- Support training initiatives to promote tax compliance awareness across business units.
Support and Training
- Assist subsidiary accountants in dealing with IRB auditors and address all tax queries and compliance matters.
- Provide training to accountants on tax matters and conduct briefings for internal stakeholders as needed.
- Assist in organizing internal seminars/trainings and presentations related to tax.
Qualifications
- Educational Background: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or a related field.
- Certifications: Professional certifications such Chartered Accountant (CA), CPA, CTIM or equivalent professional qualification.
Required Skills
- Skills in foreign tax, transfer pricing and tax audit.
Experience
- 58 years of relevant experience in tax compliance within a multinational company or Big 4 Firm.
- Strong knowledge of direct and indirect tax compliance frameworks and regulatory requirements.
- Experience with multi-jurisdictional compliance and e-filing platforms.
