BMC Firmware Engineer

Summary 

The BMC Firmware Engineer develops, debugs, tests, integrates, deploys, and supports BMC firmware for Intel, AMD, and next-generation server platforms. The engineer works under technical guidance and collaborates with BIOS, hardware, validation, manufacturing, system, and project teams to deliver reliable firmware throughout the product lifecycle.  The role is expected to build practical capability in embedded Linux, BMC architecture, server management interfaces, board bring-up, defect investigation, and disciplined engineering execution. 

Key Responsibilities:

Performs tasks such as, but not limited to, the following: 

• Develop and maintain assigned BMC firmware components and platform features. 
• Implement requirements in C/C++ within embedded Linux or OpenBMC environments. 
• Support BMC functions involving sensors, inventory, event logging, system health, firmware update, power, thermal, and platform management. 
• Participate in server board bring-up, feature integration, functional validation, regression testing, and production support. 
• Reproduce defects, collect logs and traces, analyze source code, and perform root cause investigation with guidance. 
• Support interfaces and protocols such as IPMI, Redfish, PLDM, MCTP, D-Bus, and platform-specific management interfaces. 
• Develop or maintain unit tests, feature tests, diagnostics, and basic test-automation scripts. 
• Use Git-based development workflows, peer review, defect tracking, and project release processes. 
• Prepare design notes, implementation records, test reports, issue analyses, and release-related documentation. 
• Collaborate with BIOS, hardware, validation, mechanical, thermal, manufacturing, system, and customer-support teams. 
• Support customer issue investigation by providing accurate technical evidence and timely status updates. 
• Follow coding standards, secure development practices, product lifecycle requirements, and team processes. 
• Continuously improve firmware quality, maintainability, test coverage, and engineering efficiency. 

Qualifications:

• Working knowledge of C/C++ programming and Linux development tools. 
• Basic understanding of embedded Linux architecture, processes, IPC, system services, and device interaction. 
• Basic understanding of BMC architecture and server hardware management. 
• Familiarity with one or more of IPMI, Redfish, PLDM, MCTP, SDR, SEL, FRU, SOL, IPMB, KCS, or DCMI. 
• Familiarity with common hardware interfaces such as I2C, IPMB, PMBus, SPI, UART, GPIO, LPC/eSPI, or JTAG. 
• Basic knowledge of ARM-based BMC devices, preferably ASPEED AST2500/AST2600 or equivalent. 
• Familiarity with Git, code review, issue tracking, build systems, and debugging tools. 
• Exposure to OpenBMC, Yocto, D-Bus, systemd, U-Boot, Linux kernel, or device-driver development is preferred. 
• Exposure to Intel Xeon and/or AMD EPYC server platforms is preferred. 
• Python or shell scripting experience is preferred. 

Typical Experience 

• Typically 2 to 5 years of embedded firmware, embedded software, Linux system software, server manageability, or related development experience. 
• Equivalent demonstrated capability may be considered based on education, project complexity, and relevant technical experience.
