About the Role

Were seeking a Cultural Service Advisor to support the U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur. This role provides expert insights into Malaysias cultural, political, and historical context, helping strengthen regional stability initiatives. You will advise and assist the Special Operations Forces Liaison Element (SOFLE) by offering cultural analysis, translation, and operational support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver cultural, political, and historical analysis to inform SOFLE activities.
  • Monitor traditional and social media; identify key influencers and risk factors.
  • Translate and interpret (English Bahasa Melayu) during meetings and field visits.
  • Build and maintain relationships with government, civil society, academia, and security forces.
  • Coordinate and document meetings, providing summaries within 2 working days.
  • Support planning of events, exercises, and engagements.
  • Submit diplomatic and operational documents to Malaysian authorities.

What Were Looking For

  • 710 years experience with NGOs, government, or civil society.
  • An advanced degree in Geopolitical Studies or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of Malaysian history, culture, and socio-political structures.
  • Familiarity with ASEAN politics and international relations.
  • Excellent communication skills in English and Bahasa Melayu.
  • Working knowledge of Cantonese or Mandarin is also highly desirable
  • Ability to travel extensively within Malaysia (up to 150 days/year).
  • Independent, reliable, and able to handle sensitive information.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

Additional Information

  • Work Schedule: MondayFriday, 07001900 hrs (with occasional weekend availability).
  • Security: Must pass a background check for U.S. Embassy access.
  • Eligibility: Open to Malaysian citizens, permanent residents, and expatriates with strong local expertise.
