Job Description
This is a contract, full-time Design Engineer role based in Nilai. The Design Engineer will be involved in the development and implementation of advanced engineering solutions for applications across the oil & gas, aviation, military, marine, and heavy industrial sectors.
The role focuses strongly on 3D scanning, reverse engineering, non-metallic 3D printing, Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM), and engineering design, while also supporting maintenance and asset integrity solutions such as Online Leak Sealing (OLS) and engineered clamp systems.
The Design Engineer will work from physical components, site measurements, technical specifications, and 3D scan data to develop accurate and manufacturable engineering solutions. The position will also involved hands-on, direct participation in design, scanning, modelling, simulation, prototyping, additive manufacturing, fabrication, testing, site inspection, and troubleshooting.
Key responsibilities include:
- Conduct 3D scanning and dimensional data acquisition of existing components, equipment, and facilities.
- Perform reverse engineering using 3D scan data, point clouds, and physical components.
- Design and develop components for non-metallic 3D printing, including prototypes, tooling, fixtures, and functional engineering parts.
- Handle Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) for metal component manufacturing, repair, modification, and prototyping, from raw file, coding, preparation, printing, and post processing.
- Perform FEA and engineering simulations using Abaqus to evaluate structural integrity and design performance.
- Perform engineering calculations and ensure designs comply with applicable ASME codes, engineering standards, and client requirements.
- Develop engineering designs for Online Leak Sealing (OLS), engineered clamps, and other maintenance solutions.
- Develop accurate 3D CAD models, assemblies, and engineering drawings using SolidWorks.
- Review client specifications, drawings, site conditions, and technical requirements to develop practical and manufacturable solutions.
- Support on-site inspections, measurements, 3D scanning, troubleshooting, and technical investigations.
- Participate directly in fabrication, assembly, prototyping, testing, hydrotesting, and commissioning activities where required.
- Prepare engineering drawings, calculations, technical reports, manufacturing documentation, and other project deliverables.
- Work closely with engineering, fabrication, QA/QC, and project teams to ensure successful project execution.
- Support the development and improvement of engineering standards, design methodologies, digital workflows, and manufacturing processes.
- Coordinate with project managers and other stakeholders to meet project schedule, quality, cost, and technical requirements.
- Be prepared to work extended hours, overtime, and ad-hoc weekends when required to support project and site activities.
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks is a MUST. Candidates may be required to complete a practical SolidWorks design test as part of the recruitment process.
- Strong understanding of 3D CAD modelling, assemblies, engineering drawings, and Design for Manufacturing (DFM).
- Experience in 3D scanning, point cloud processing, reverse engineering, or non-metallic 3D printing/additive manufacturing is highly advantageous.
- Knowledge or experience in WAAM, metal additive manufacturing, welding, fabrication, or repair is an advantage.
- Knowledge or experience in Abaqus/FEA is highly advantageous.
- Ability to interpret ASME codes, engineering standards, drawings, and client specifications.
- Experience in oil & gas, aviation, defence/military, marine, heavy industry, fabrication, maintenance, or engineering services is preferred.
- Knowledge or experience in Online Leak Sealing, clamp design, corrosion prevention, or asset integrity solutions is an advantage.
- Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to translate technical requirements into practical, reliable, and manufacturable solutions.
- Hands-on and practical mindset, with willingness to work directly with equipment, machinery, prototypes, fabrication, testing, and site activities.
- Willingness to work extended hours and ad-hoc weekends when required by project or site requirements.
- Able to work independently and effectively within a multidisciplinary engineering team.
- Strong willingness to learn, adapt, and work with new and emerging engineering technologies.
