Job Description

OVERALL SCOPE OF JOB DESRIPTION

The Executive Director of Sales establishes the overall commercial direction for the resort, leads the annual commercial planning process, aligns Sales and Revenue strategies and ensures that the team delivers against agreed revenue, market share, profitability and brand-positioning objectives.

The role carries no direct responsibility for a geographic market or standard account portfolio. Geographic markets, segments and day-to-day account management remain with the relevant Sales or Revenue team members.

The Executive Director of Sales acts as executive sponsor for a defined portfolio of strategically important relationships, including:

  • The Leading Hotels of the World
  • Serandipians
  • Internova Travel Group
  • SmartFlyer
  • Other major global luxury consortia and agency networks
  • Up to five strategic wholesale accounts
  • The resort's top three online travel agency relationships

Executive sponsorship includes senior relationship management, strategic direction, performance oversight and support for significant negotiations. Day-to-day account ownership, activity, follow-up, reporting and commercial implementation remain with the designated Sales or Revenue team member.

The position requires an accomplished luxury hospitality sales leader with extensive knowledge of international leisure, luxury travel trade and boutique MICE segments, established industry relationships and proven experience leading high-performing Sales and Revenue teams.

The Executive Director of Sales will not initially be responsible for the real estate sale of The Datai Reserve residences. Once the completed residences enter The Datai Langkawi's managed accommodation inventory under the applicable rental and management arrangements, the role will be responsible for integrating this additional inventory into the resort's sales strategy and driving demand, occupancy, average rate and revenue contribution alongside the resort's existing 122 keys.

As the Datai Hotels & Resorts portfolio expands, the position is intended to evolve into Cluster Executive Director of Sales, currently anticipated from 2029. In this future capacity, the role will lead cluster sales activities across multiple hotels and managed accommodation products, potentially including residences, meeting facilities and mixed-use developments.

SPECIFIC DUTIES & PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Sales Strategy and Commercial Leadership
  • Lead the preparation and implementation of the annual commercial plan for The Datai Langkawi in collaboration with Revenue, Reservations, Marketing and relevant operational stakeholders.
  • Translate the resort's business objectives into clear strategies, actions and targets by geographic market, segment, channel and account.
  • Establish short-, medium- and long-term sales priorities across leisure, luxury travel trade, wholesale, consortia, corporate, MICE, groups, weddings and events.
  • Identify new revenue opportunities, emerging markets, strategic partnerships and high-value customer segments.
  • Ensure that the commercial strategy supports profitable revenue growth, an appropriate business mix, rate integrity, market diversification and the resort's luxury positioning.

Future Cluster Responsibilities

As the Datai Hotels & Resorts portfolio expands and the cluster sales model is activated, the Executive Director of Sales will be expected to transition into the role of Cluster Executive Director of Sales.

  • Future responsibilities are expected to include:
  • Lead the cluster sales strategy across multiple Datai Hotels & Resorts properties and managed accommodation products.
  • Manage shared, regional and global account strategies across the portfolio.
  • Establish clear account ownership and prevent duplication between properties.
  • Expand executive sponsorship of strategically important relationships where these have relevance across multiple properties.
  • Create commercial synergies across hotels, managed residences, meeting facilities and mixed-use developments.
  • Standardise sales processes, reporting, account planning, CRM practices and performance measurement.
  • Allocate cluster Sales resources according to portfolio priorities and market opportunities.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in hospitality management, Business Administration, Sales, Marketing or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive sales and commercial experience within luxury hotels, resorts or internationally recognized hospitality brands.
  • Minimum of five years in a senior Sales leadership position, preferably as Director of Sales, Director of Sales and Marketing, Executive Director of Sales or in a cluster or regional capacity.
  • Proven experience leading and developing a sizeable, multi-level Sales team.
  • Strong international luxury leisure and travel trade experience.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of luxury consortia, preferred partner programmes, tour operators, wholesalers, travel advisors, OTAs and relevant distribution partners.
  • Demonstrable experience in MICE, group, incentive, event and meeting-facility sales.
  • Established relationships across key international feeder markets and luxury travel networks.
  • Experience managing or providing executive sponsorship to major consortia, global agency networks, wholesalers and distribution partners.
  • Experience preparing and managing commercial plans, forecasts, departmental budgets and Sales expenditure.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English.
  • Ability to communicate confidently and professionally with international clients, partners, owners, colleagues and senior stakeholders.
  • Contribution to the profitability, positioning and market share of The Datai Langkawi and, in future, the wider Datai Hotels & Resorts portfolio.
