Job Description

About Emerge Insurtech

Emerge is an AI-native specialist insurance intermediary built around emerging risks, emerging leaders, and emerging Asia. We build the technology, the operations and the distribution that let insurance brands run digitally, across our own brands: Oyen (pet insurance), Foundation (property and engineering insurance), Contingent (SME insurance), Voyage (trade and freight insurance) and more.

Increasingly we build that with AI: automating what used to be manual, so the team spends its time on judgment calls instead of admin.

Why should you join us

  • If you've been building things with AI tools and wondering when finance teams will catch up, we've caught up.
  • If you want to learn the numbers properly AND help build the system that produces them.
  • If you'd rather spend a week removing a task than a year repeating it.
  • If you're tired of a month-end close that is the same manual work every month, forever.
  • If you want to be part of a small team where your judgment carries weight from week one.
  • If you're interested in disrupting a US$5 trillion industry and being at the heart of insurance going digital.
  • If you enjoy a high-paced environment with some uncertainty but high opportunity, and freedom to experiment and learn from mistakes.

About the Role

This is not an AI role, and it is not a spreadsheet-maintenance role.

It is a finance role in a company that is rebuilding how finance gets done.

Most finance teams scale by adding headcount. We're building the opposite. Emerge is building the end-to-end financial journey for an insurance group, premium in, settlement out, reconciliation and management reporting, as an automated pipeline rather than a queue of manual tasks.

You will run the day-to-day finance work for our D2C (direct-to-consumer) and B2B (business-to-business) pillars, and report to senior finance, who own the judgment calls and the sign-offs. You will do some manual work, because somebody has to and it is genuinely how you learn a business. The difference is that here every manual process has an expiry date, and you will help retire it. You will also work hand in hand with the AI Ops team who build the automation: you describe how a process should work, pressure-test what they build, and catch what is wrong before it ships.

But you have to understand the work before you can automate it. Nothing goes live on your pillars until you have tested it, and you tell us what should stay manual.

This role suits someone early in their career who wants to learn finance in a place that is actively rebuilding it. If you are looking for a fixed remit that never changes, this is not the job, because what you own in month 12 will not be what you own in month 1. Early on, a senior will check your work closely, and the direction is towards you being trusted, which only works if you check your own work first.

What you'll do

D2C: matching payments to policies (about 30%)

  • Match incoming payments to the right policy across payment gateways, cards and bank channels, and resolve the breaks: unmatched receipts, refunds, chargebacks and timing differences.
  • Much of this is manual at first. The goal is for machines to do most of the matching, so you review the exceptions instead of every line, and tell us where the matching logic gets it wrong.
  • Turn D2C collections into clean revenue and cash data that the rest of finance can trust.

B2B: from policy to cash (about 25%)

  • Support the B2B flow end to end: invoicing, payment, renewals, chasing outstanding payments and recovering commission.
  • Keep the list of who owes us, and for how long, up to date, and run the chasing: which clients are genuinely late, which are disputing, and which just need a reminder.
  • Learn what triggers an invoice, how a renewal rolls over and when an outstanding payment becomes overdue, well enough to spot when the system gets it wrong.

Paying insurers (about 20%)

  • Prepare the premiums we pass on to insurers: check what we collected against what is due, and make sure nothing sits past its deadline. Senior finance signs off, and you make sure the numbers behind it are right.
  • Reconcile against the insurers statements, including the high-volume D2C book, and help push the matching towards automation.
  • Process cancellations and changes to existing policies: premium refunds, where each refund goes, and taking back commission where it applies.

Working with the AI Ops team (about 15%)

  • You are closest to the process, so you are the first to know when something is wrong. When an automated flow books the wrong entry or a match fails, you find it and say so.
  • Learn to describe a process clearly enough for an engineer to build it. You will be coached on this, and nobody expects you to arrive able to do it.
  • Test what gets built before it is trusted. Try the awkward cases and break it on purpose.
  • Use AI tools in your own work and tell us honestly what helps and what does not.

Reporting and controls (about 10%)

  • Prepare the monthly P&L, cash and KPI reports for D2C and B2B, for senior finance to review.
  • Keep policies grouped by type of insurance in the same way everywhere, so reporting, commission analysis and regulatory submissions all cut the same way.
  • Follow our financial controls, flag when one is being worked around, and help pull together what the auditors ask for each year.

What success looks like in 12 months

  • You run the full D2C reconciliation cycle on your own, with senior finance reviewing instead of doing.
  • You can explain the whole B2B flow from policy to cash to someone else, and say where the money gets stuck and why.
  • You prepare insurer payments and monthly reports to a standard that needs comments, not corrections.
  • You can describe a finance process clearly enough for an engineer to automate it, and you test what comes back.

What we're looking for

Must have

  • A degree in accounting, finance or a related field. Fresh graduates with a solid internship are welcome to apply.
  • 0 to 3 years of experience.
  • Comfortable in Excel or Google Sheets: lookups, pivots, and cleaning up a messy export without losing your temper. We will teach you the rest.
  • Evidence that you check your own work. In the first round we will ask you about this directly.
  • Clear written English, because you will be writing to clients, insurers and colleagues from week one.
  • Genuine interest in automation and AI tools applied to real work.

Nice to have

  • ACCA, CIMA, CPA or equivalent, whether qualified, part-qualified or planning to start.
  • Any exposure to insurance, takaful or financial services. An internship counts.
  • Audit, shared services, or accounts payable or receivable experience.
  • Hobby-level SQL, Python or low-code automation, or knowledge of Malaysian e-Invoicing (MyInvois).
  • Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin or Tamil alongside English.

The kind of person who thrives here

  • You are curious and you teach yourself. When something does not make sense, you go and find out instead of waiting to be told, and you have picked up tools on your own before, AI tools included, because you wanted to.
  • You are detail-minded. You notice when a number is slightly off, and you check your own work before someone else has to.
  • You are comfortable not knowing. In a small team you will hit unfamiliar things every week, and I do not know, let me find out is a much better answer than a confident guess.
