About the role:

JOB_ROLE: FinOps SME

DOMAIN: Automation | SPECIALIZATION: FinOps SME

Typically 5–7+ years relevant experience (Lead Engineer)

1. Role Summary

The Data Center Engineer is accountable for end-to-end delivery and/or operational ownership of FinOps SME within the INFRA tower. The role ensures stability, security, compliance, and continuous improvement to meet agreed SLAs/OLAs and business outcomes.

2. Band Expectations

  • Leads domain operations and complex troubleshooting; drives automation/standardization; mentors engineers; owns KPIs and RCA quality.
  • Approves technical approach within domain; leads problem management and improvement roadmap.

3. Scope of Responsibilities

  • BAU operations: monitoring, incident/request handling, service restoration and fulfilment.
  • Planned maintenance: patching, upgrades, lifecycle activities, configuration control.
  • Process adherence: incident/problem/change/release and audit evidence.
  • Continuous improvement: automation, standardization, knowledge management and cost optimization.
  • Stakeholder management across infra, security, apps, vendors, and governance forums.

4. Key Responsibilities (Detailed)

  • Act as FinOps SME for data center / hybrid cloud cost management: establish cost visibility, allocation, and optimization practices.
  • Define tagging/chargeback/showback model and governance; implement budget controls, forecasting, and anomaly detection.
  • Drive optimization: rightsizing, reservations/savings plans, storage tiering, license optimization, and decommission governance.
  • Develop dashboards and executive reporting for cost, usage, and savings; partner with Finance and Cloud teams.
  • Establish FinOps operating cadence: monthly reviews, action tracking, and continuous improvement pipeline.
  • Enable automation for cost controls and policy enforcement in provisioning workflows.

5. ITIL / Governance Responsibilities

  • Incident: triage, escalation, communications and SLA adherence.
  • Problem: trend analysis, RCA/PIR, corrective and preventive actions.
  • Change/Release: risk assessment, approvals, implementation/backout plans and post-implementation review.
  • Configuration: CMDB/asset updates, documentation and verification.
  • Security: access governance, vulnerability remediation support, compliance evidence.

6. Required Technical Skills

  • FinOps frameworks and cloud billing models (Azure/AWS)
  • Cost management tools (Azure Cost Management, AWS Cost Explorer/Cur)
  • Data analysis (Excel/PowerBI) and reporting
  • Automation/scripting for cost controls
  • Strong stakeholder management

7. Key Deliverables

  • Monthly cost governance pack (budget vs actual, forecast, savings)
  • Optimization backlog and benefits tracking
  • Chargeback/showback reports and tagging compliance reports
  • Cost anomaly alerts and runbooks
  • Policies/guardrails for cost control

8. KPIs / Success Measures

  • Cost savings realized vs target
  • Forecast accuracy
  • Tagging compliance rate
  • Reduction in idle/underutilized resources
  • Timely delivery of governance reports

9. Key Stakeholders / Interfaces

  • Service Desk / NOC / SOC
  • Infrastructure towers (compute, network, storage, security)
  • Application owners / DevOps / product teams
  • Vendors/OEMs and managed service partners
  • Governance (SIAM/ITSM) and Compliance

10. Shift / On-call Model

As per operational roster, may require shift/on-call support and participation in planned maintenance and major incident bridges.

11. Qualifications & Preferred Certifications

  • Bachelor's degree in IT/Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • ITIL Foundation (preferred).
  • Role-specific certifications preferred (AWS/Azure, VMware VCP/VCAP, database vendor certs, backup/storage certs, FinOps, etc.).
