Head of Legal - Energy Trading
Job Description
The Role
We are seeking a Head of Legal to lead the legal and compliance function in Singapore for a growing energy trading business. This is a hands-on, commercially-minded leadership role suited to someone who thrives in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial trading environment and is comfortable operating across legal, regulatory and compliance matters.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the legal & compliance function in Singapore, providing day-to-day guidance, mentorship and leadership to the team.
- Provide full legal support to the trading business, advising on transaction structures and drafting and negotiating documentation for power, gas and other physical and financial trading contracts, including offtake and supply arrangements.
- Build, develop and continuously improve compliance frameworks, policies and governance across APAC markets, ensuring they support the business's growth rather than slow it down.
- Act as a trusted advisor to trading and commercial teams, providing practical, risk-based guidance on legal and regulatory matters.
- Monitor regulatory developments across APAC, assess their impact on the business, and build and maintain relationships with regulators and external stakeholders.
- Lead compliance risk assessments, ensure appropriate controls are in place, and identify, manage and escalate risks where needed.
- Review and negotiate master trading agreements (e.g. ISDA), general terms and conditions, and counterparty contract terms.
- Advise on new projects and strategic initiatives, including expansion into new markets and products.
- Handle disputes relating to trading contracts and manage outside counsel where required.
- Work closely with traders, credit, treasury and operations teams to support deal execution and identify special contractual provisions.
- Operate with a high degree of autonomy and sound commercial judgement, knowing when to escalate complex or sensitive matters.
Key Requirements
- At least 10 years post-qualification legal experience.
- A resilient, dynamic self-starter who is energised by, and able to operate effectively in, a growing, fast-paced business.
- Exposure to the power, gas or renewables sectors is ideal.
- Proven management experience, with the ability to mentor and provide leadership to a legal and compliance team.
- APAC experience, with a strong understanding of the regulatory landscape across the region.
- Strong commercial judgement and the ability to build trust with senior stakeholders across a lean, high-growth organisation.
