Functional (job responsibilities)
Providing pro-active, in-depth, business-focused legal advice to the various disciplines and functions within the Bank and the Bank Group in an effective and timely manner to ensure that legal risks, issues and disputes are minimized.
Reviewing, drafting and negotiating on a broad range of documentation, including but not limited to banking documentation, as well as other types of business, commercial and transactional documentation such product documentation, contracts, etc, balancing legal and regulatory requirements.
Partnering with cross functional teams, including working closely with legal teams of subsidiaries and overseas branches, to identify, analyze and mitigate legal risks in relation to business initiatives, projects, operations and new products and strategize to develop legally acceptable solutions.
Assisting the Head, Legal Department to implement initiatives and processes to improve the delivery of the legal function to the Bank.
Management and/or monitoring of litigation and disputes against the Bank/Bank Group, including claims, investigations and litigation with employees, customers and other third parties.
Ensure compliance with legal and governance requirements as appropriate when working on product design and modification in relation to banking products and commercial transactions.
Management and legal advisory on protection of Bank's assets, including the Bank Group's intellectual property portfolio management.
Communicates across functions and actively participates in increasing knowledge, best practice and awareness of legal commitments and initiatives through the business.
Active project support through provision of legal advice.
Managerial (team/group responsibilities)
To add value through analytical review of available information, conduct of necessary legal research and make well-considered legal opinions, case arguments and recommendations to relevant stakeholders within the organization.
To multi-task effectively when faced with conflicting deadlines and multiple demands.
If required, to represent Legal as a member of working groups where legal representation is required.
To work closely with other members of the legal function within the Hong Leong Bank group of companies.
To guide and mentor junior Legal Managers.
Organizational (organizational responsibilities) including Strategic Cost Management and Financial Goals
Interface as necessary with other business and business support teams within the Bank to maintain teamwork at all operational levels and also to keep updated on stakeholders requirements.
To ensure well-considered opinions are rendered so as to ensure the organization's interests are protected from a legal perspective.
Proficiency in applicable laws, rules and regulations in order to provide guidance and awareness to the operating units on potential legal issues.
Education/Qualification
At least 8 years of PQE working experience in the following areas:
general practice with an established legal firm in Malaysia handling portfolios in any one or more relevant areas, such as banking, conveyancing, corporate finance or restructuring, banking litigation and/or In-house counsel with working knowledge in related areas of banking and financial services in Malaysia.
Experience/Requirements
Sound knowledge of Malaysian laws, in particular areas of banking and finance
Experience or working knowledge of Islamic banking/finance and/or Islamic deal documentation or alternatively, technology, would be an added advantage
Commercial acumen, resourceful and ability to work with minimal supervision and excellent attention to detail.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly in the English language, with good organizational and interpersonal skills.
Ability to engage with a variety of stakeholders and colleagues at all levels
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
