Wood is currently recruiting for a Lead Piping Layout Engineer to support a major FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Offloading) bid. This role will be responsible for leading piping layout and design activities during the proposal phase, ensuring safe, operable, maintainable, and cost-effective piping arrangements are developed in accordance with client requirements, offshore standards, and project execution objectives.

The successful candidate will provide technical leadership for piping layout development across topsides process facilities, utility systems, marine interfaces, and supporting infrastructure. Working closely with Process, Mechanical, Structural, Marine, Electrical and Instrumentation disciplines, the Lead Piping Layout Engineer will play a critical role in developing the FPSO layout philosophy, modularisation strategy, weight optimisation, constructability approach, and overall engineering execution plan supporting a competitive bid submission.

Responsibilities

Piping Layout Leadership

  • Lead all piping layout and piping design activities supporting the FPSO bid and proposal phase.
  • Act as the focal point for piping layout engineering within the bid team and coordinate with the Project Engineering Manager, Discipline Leads, and Client representatives.
  • Develop and maintain the piping layout execution strategy, design philosophy, and key deliverables required for bid submission.
  • Provide technical leadership and direction to piping designers and engineers involved in the proposal.
  • Ensure piping layouts are developed in accordance with project requirements, offshore regulations, company standards, and industry best practices.

FPSO Topsides Layout Development

  • Lead the development of piping arrangements for FPSO topsides facilities.
  • Develop and optimise overall equipment and piping layouts for FPSO modules and supporting systems.
  • Ensure efficient utilisation of limited deck space while maintaining accessibility, operability, maintainability, and safety requirements.
  • Support development of module arrangements and interface layouts between topsides, hull, utility systems, and marine facilities.
  • Ensure layouts support modularisation, fabrication, transportation, integration, and offshore installation requirements.
  • Evaluate and manage potential clashes, access restrictions, maintenance constraints, and safety considerations throughout the layout development process.

3D Modelling and Design Integration

  • Lead development and review of 3D layout models supporting the FPSO concept and bid design.
  • Ensure piping layouts are fully integrated with structural, equipment, electrical, instrumentation, HVAC, mechanical, and marine systems.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary model reviews to ensure efficient design integration and clash resolution.
  • Support development of plot plans, equipment layouts, piping routing studies, and module arrangement drawings.
  • Ensure design solutions support future maintenance access, equipment removal routes, and operational requirements.
  • Promote effective use of digital engineering tools and 3D modelling technologies throughout the proposal phase.

Technical Assurance and Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with applicable client specifications, offshore regulations, classification requirements, international codes, and project standards.
  • Support HAZID, HAZOP, constructability reviews, model reviews, and safety assessments.
  • Apply Safety by Design principles throughout layout development.
  • Ensure adequate access, escape routes, hazardous area requirements, fire protection considerations, and operational safety requirements are incorporated into layouts.
  • Review and approve piping deliverables in accordance with project quality requirements and established checking procedures.
  • Maintain technical consistency across all piping design deliverables generated during the bid phase.

Interface Management

  • Coordinate closely with Process, Mechanical, Structural, Marine, Naval Architecture, Electrical, Instrumentation, Safety, Procurement, and Construction teams.
  • Support engagement with equipment vendors to ensure piping requirements are incorporated into package layouts.
  • Manage piping interfaces between FPSO topsides facilities and hull systems.
  • Coordinate layout requirements associated with riser balconies, utility systems, flare systems, loading systems, and offshore interfaces.
  • Ensure interface requirements are identified, tracked, and effectively managed throughout the proposal development process.

Constructability and Offshore Execution Support

  • Ensure constructability principles are incorporated into piping layouts and design development.
  • Support fabrication yard evaluations and module assembly strategies.
  • Consider lifting requirements, transportation constraints, hook-up methodology, and offshore installation requirements during layout development.
  • Contribute to commissioning, start-up, and operational readiness considerations within the proposed design.
  • Ensure design solutions support efficient fabrication, minimised rework, and safe offshore execution.

Qualifications

  • Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Piping Engineering, or equivalent technical discipline.
  • Minimum 10-15 years of experience in Oil & Gas, LNG, Offshore Facilities, or FPSO projects.
  • Extensive experience in piping layout and design for offshore production facilities.
  • Previous experience supporting FPSO Concept, FEED, EPC, EPCI, or major bid and proposal activities.
  • Demonstrated experience leading piping design teams on large multidisciplinary offshore projects.

Knowledge, Skills And Experience

  • Strong experience in FPSO topsides piping layout and offshore facilities design.
  • Thorough understanding of piping design codes, standards, and offshore engineering practices.
  • Strong knowledge of offshore constructability, modularisation, fabrication, and installation requirements.
  • Experience with industry-standard 3D modelling platforms such as Smart 3D (S3D), E3D, PDMS, AutoCAD Plant 3D, or equivalent.
  • Strong understanding of safety, operability, maintainability, and accessibility requirements within offshore facilities.
  • Ability to evaluate design risks and develop practical, cost-effective engineering solutions.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, stakeholder management, and coordination skills.
  • Experience working within multicultural and geographically dispersed project teams.
