Job Description

Job Purpose:

The Legal Counsel is responsible for providing legal advice and support to ensure the company's compliance with laws, regulations, and industry standards. They collaborate with internal departments, external legal firms, and senior management to address legal and operational matters.

Responsible to/Report to: General Manager, Group General Counsel's Office

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Monitor and interpret changes in laws and regulations, develop compliance strategies.
  2. Prepare, review, and negotiate contracts and agreements.
  3. Identify and mitigate legal risks, develop risk management policies.
  4. Advise on intellectual property rights and assist in dispute resolution.
  5. Provide guidance on product liability matters.
  6. Collaborate with external counsel on litigation and dispute resolution.
  7. Engage with government agencies and regulators.
  8. Assist in corporate governance matters and compliance.
  9. Support mergers and acquisitions.
  10. Perform other legal tasks assigned by superiors.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Participate in Legal Department training and development initiatives.
  • Support implementation of workflows, processes, and procedures.
  • Review, update, or draft policies/manuals for the group.
  • Review and draft board papers.

Job Requirements:

  1. Law Degree or equivalent qualification.
  2. Active membership in the Advocate Association of Sarawak or equivalent.
  3. Minimum 5 years PQE as legal counsel, preferably with MNC exposure.
  4. Strong knowledge of local, national, and international laws and regulations.
  5. Excellent research and analytical skills.
  6. Proficiency in legal research tools and software, Microsoft Office.
  7. Proficiency in Bahasa Malaysia and English, additional language proficiency preferred.
  8. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  9. Sound judgment and decision-making abilities.
  10. Strong attention to detail and multitasking abilities.
  11. Commitment to ethical conduct and confidentiality.
  12. Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  13. Strong organizational and analytical abilities.
  14. Cultural sensitivity and ability to work within a team.
  15. Interest in continuous improvement and customer centricity.
  16. Business or financial background preferred.
  17. Willing to consider law graduates not yet legally qualified.
