SMT Process Engineer / Senior SMT Process Engineer (NPI & Automation)
Your Job
As an
SMT Process Engineer or
Senior SMT Process Engineer, your primary role is to support
new product introduction (NPI) and
automation development within the SMT manufacturing environment. You will develop, optimize, and sustain
SMT, reflow, and wave soldering processes to achieve worldclass productivity, quality, and cost performance.
Our Team
You will be part of a collaborative, crossfunctional engineering team involving
Automation, Manufacturing, Quality, R&D, and key suppliers. The team works closely with China-based manufacturing partners and equipment vendors to ensure alignment on tooling, process, and automation readiness in support of SMT production goals.
What You Will Do
- Develop, optimize, and sustain SMT processes including solder paste printing, SPI, pickandplace, reflow profiling, AOI, and wave soldering.
- Support NPI builds, ensuring SMT process readiness, tooling validation, and equipment setup meet quality and output requirements.
- Work with Automation, R&D, and suppliers on fixtures, wave pallets, solder printing, and SMT tooling design and continuous improvement.
- Conduct reflows and wave solder profile optimization to improve yield and reduce defect escapes.
- Analyze SMT process data using DOE, SPC, and MSA to drive improvements in yield, cycle time, and process capability.
- Lead troubleshooting activities for SMT-related issues such as solder defects, component placement accuracy, reflow anomalies, or wave solder bridging.
- Prepare documentation including process specifications, work instructions, PFMEA, control plans, and technical reports.
- Participate in Lean, Kaizen, and Six Sigma initiatives to enhance process stability and manufacturing efficiency.
- Collaborate with China engineering teams and external equipment vendors to ensure smooth project execution and technical alignment.
Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)
- Hands-on experience with SMT processes, reflow ovens, wave soldering machines, and solder paste printing technologies.
- Strong understanding of SMT defect mechanisms such as tombstoning, solder bridging, insufficient solder, skewing, and voids.
- Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, DOE, SPC, PFMEA, and Six Sigma methodologies.
- Strong analytical and problemsolving ability to interpret complex SMT process data.
- Mandarin proficiency is preferred due to regular collaboration with Chinabased engineering and equipment teams.
What Will Put You Ahead (Preferred Qualifications)
As a Process Engineer:
- Experience supporting NPI builds and SMT automation projects with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and suppliers to resolve technical issues.
- Demonstrated capability in SMT defect troubleshooting and process improvements.
- Familiarity with CAD software like Siemens NX or SolidWorks is preferred
As a Senior Process Engineer:
- Proven ability to lead endtoend NPI and automation projects, from concept through mass production readiness.
- Strong leadership and decision-making skills in driving SMT technical strategies.
- Experience mentoring junior engineers or technicians on SMT process engineering best practices.
- Established record of implementing long-term SMT process robustness, capability, and standardization.
- Knowledge in CAD tools such as SolidWorks or Siemens NX for fixture and tooling review.
