Python Developer (Backend & API)

Role Overview

We're looking for a Python Developer to join a small, fast-moving New Zealand data engineering team.

You'll build backend services and APIs for applications running natively in Snowflake.

You'll use AI tools daily to move quickly. But you'll also know when the output is wrong, and fix it. We value people who think for themselves and ask for help when it makes sense.

Responsibilities

• Design, build and maintain backend services in Python
• Develop and integrate APIs, including different authentication methods and secure data exchange
• Build and support applications within Snowflake, including Snowflake Native Apps
• Use AI tools like GitHub Copilot and LLM-based agents to prototype and build faster, while reviewing and correcting their output
• Work with data using Python dataframes and common third-party packages
• Write tests and help keep the codebase reliable as it grows
• Contribute to frontend work where needed
• Communicate progress clearly and raise blockers early

Must Have

• Strong Python backend experience (mid to senior level)
• Hands-on API design and development
• Good judgment with AI tools. You can tell good output from bad, and don't follow it blindly
• Comfortable working independently, and knowing when to ask for help
• Good written and spoken English

Good to Have

• Frontend experience with a JavaScript framework (React, Vue or Next.js)
• Snowflake experience, especially Snowpark or Native Apps
• Experience building integrations with SaaS platforms
• Familiarity with data engineering concepts
• Test-driven development practices
• Degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field

Other Requirements

• Notice period of 1 month or less
• Able to work core overlap hours with New Zealand (typically Malaysia mornings)
