Senior Data Engineer - Malaysia

Location: Subang Jaya, Malaysia

Role Type: 12 month contract (extension possibility)

We're partnering with a major global education provider undergoing a large-scale digital transformation. They are building a new technology capability hub in Malaysia, focused on modernising student systems, uplifting enterprise technology, and delivering next‑generation digital experiences across multiple campuses.

This is a unique opportunity for an experienced Senior Data Engineer to join a multi‑year strategic program modernising the entire student management ecosystem.

About the Role

This position focuses on designing, developing, and maintaining data pipelines and analytics solutions on a modern Lakehouse platform.

You will be a key member of the new data and analytics capability within IT Services. Reporting to the Data Analytics Manager within IT Services, the successful candidate will be responsible for creating scalable data solutions, managing data quality, and enabling effective data-driven decision-making across the University.

Your Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and maintain complex data pipelines and large-scale data ingestion solutions
• Execute rigorous data quality checks and remediation to maintain data integrity.
• Develop, document, test, and refine data integration services and scripts to support analytics and reporting capabilities.
• Provide technical expertise and guidance on data platforms and integration practices to internal and external stakeholders.
• Support data modelling, including logical, physical, and dimensional data model designs.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives in data engineering practices, including conducting regular solution reviews and participating in communities of practice.

Required Skills

• Proven experience designing and implementing scalable, high-performance data analytics platforms, specifically involving Lakehouse architecture and cloud-based data management (e.g., Azure, Delta Lake, Databricks).
• Strong technical skills with PySpark, Apache Spark, Databricks, Python, and SQL.
• Demonstrated capability in designing and implementing robust data ingestion patterns, including batch processing, streaming, ETL (extract, transform, load), and ELT (extract, load, transform), to manage large-scale datasets effectively.
• Ability to performance tune and optimise large-scale data systems.
• Experience with DevOps practices, including building, maintaining, and optimising CI/CD pipelines to support efficient, automated, and reliable deployment processes.
• Experience with Agile delivery practices, including proficiency with Azure DevOps, Confluence, and Git.
