Job Description

Company Overview

Equitable Technologies is an MIT-founded medical technology startup headquartered in Boston, with a fast-growing product development hub in Kuala Lumpur. We're currently operating in stealth mode as we develop a breakthrough approach to cancer screening - a mission that has the potential for massive real-world impact.

We're supported by a world-class advisory board with leaders from MIT, Harvard, the US FDA, and Cleveland Clinic- and we're now growing our team in KL to shape and deliver this technology to the world.

Job Overview

We're looking for an experienced Senior Embedded Software Engineer to design and build reliable firmware for next-generation medical devices.

In this role, you will work closely with our hardware, software, and AI teams to develop low-level embedded systems, integrate sensors and peripherals, and bring complex hardware-software systems to life.

You will play a key role in firmware architecture, hardware bring-up, and system integration, helping translate innovative ideas into robust real-world products.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop embedded firmware for microcontrollers and embedded systems used in medical devices.
  • Implement and maintain low-level drivers for hardware peripherals such as I2C, SPI, UART, CAN, GPIO, and sensors.
  • Develop firmware in RTOS or bare-metal environments for real-time applications.
  • Perform hardware bring-up, board debugging, and system integration during prototype and production phases.
  • Collaborate with hardware engineers to integrate sensors, actuators, and communication interfaces.
  • Debug complex hardwaresoftware interactions using tools such as JTAG, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and trace tools.
  • Design robust multi-threaded firmware architectures and optimize system performance, power usage, and memory footprint.
  • Develop internal tools and scripts (Python or similar) to support firmware development, testing, and debugging.
  • Support firmware testing, validation, and troubleshooting across the product development lifecycle.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to best practices in embedded software development.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in embedded firmware development.
  • Strong programming skills in C/C++ for embedded systems.
  • Experience developing firmware for ARM-based microcontrollers or SoCs.
  • Experience working with RTOS environments or bare-metal systems.
  • Strong understanding of embedded communication protocols such as I2C, SPI, UART, and CAN.
  • Experience debugging embedded systems using JTAG, trace tools, or hardware debugging equipment.
  • Solid understanding of interrupt-driven systems, multi-threading, and memory management.
  • Ability to work closely with hardware teams and debug system-level issues.
  • Strong problem-solving ability and clear communication skills.

Nice to Have

  • Experience working in medical devices, automotive, or safety-critical systems.
  • Familiarity with firmware validation, HIL testing, or CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience with embedded Linux systems.
  • Knowledge of safety or quality standards such as ISO 26262, IEC 62304, or similar.
  • Experience building automation tools or firmware testing frameworks.

What We Offer

  • Be part of a MedTech startup shaping the future of healthcare technology.
  • Work in a collaborative environment with software, hardware, and AI experts.
  • Opportunity to work on cutting-edge medical technology with global impact.
  • Fast-paced startup environment with significant ownership and technical influence.
  • Competitive compensation for top-tier talent.
