About the Role
We are looking for a highly experienced Staff AI Engineer / Staff Backend Engineer to join a fast-moving deep-tech company building production-grade systems at scale. This role is suited for hands-on, hard-core engineers who have personally built and owned backend systems end-to-end, with a strong bias toward practicality and clean, maintainable solutions over over-engineering.
You will play a key role in shaping system architecture, writing high-quality production code, and making pragmatic engineering decisions in an early-stage, high-ownership environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain production-ready backend systems with high reliability and performance
- Take ownership of systems from design through deployment and operations
- Make pragmatic architectural decisions with a focus on simplicity and long-term maintainability
- Work closely with product and engineering stakeholders to translate requirements into scalable solutions
- Contribute to DevOps practices, deployment pipelines, and infrastructure decisions
- Mentor engineers where needed and set a strong engineering standard by example
Requirements
- Proven experience building deep-tech or complex backend systems in production environments
- Strong background as a hands-on backend engineer, not purely architectural or managerial
- Experience coding in modern backend languages such as Rust, Go, Node.js, or similar
- Solid DevOps experience, including CI/CD, cloud infrastructure, monitoring, and deployment
- Strong sense of engineering pragmatismprioritizing workable, elegant solutions over unnecessary complexity
- Demonstrated ability to work independently with high ownership (e.g., early-stage startups, solo engineer roles)
Nice to Have
- Experience with AI/ML systems or applied AI in production environments
- If no prior AI/ML experience, a strong interest and willingness to learn is required
- Background in founding or building a startup, or experience as a one-person engineering team
