Strategic Lead, Financial Lines (Commercial Portfolio)

Our client, a leading organization within the commercial insurance sector, is seeking a Strategic Lead, Financial Lines (Commercial Portfolio) to lead and grow its Financial Lines portfolio.

This is a senior leadership role responsible for underwriting strategy, portfolio profitability, governance, and market growth. The successful candidate will play a critical role in shaping underwriting direction, strengthening broker and client relationships, and developing technical and leadership capabilities within the team.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership

• Develop and execute annual business plans covering growth targets, profitability objectives, loss ratio performance, and distribution priorities.

• Identify emerging market opportunities and risk trends using data driven insights to continuously refine underwriting and portfolio strategies.

Market & Customer Focus

• Apply strong market knowledge, competitive awareness, and distribution insights to ensure customer and broker needs are effectively met.

• Work closely with local and regional teams to translate strategy into executable plans that deliver sustainable value.

Underwriting Governance

• Act as a senior referral point for underwriting decisions requiring higher authority.

• Ensure consistent application of underwriting standards, strong governance, and disciplined risk selection across all markets.

• Proactively monitor underwriting outcomes and implement changes to improve performance.

Collaboration & Stakeholder Management

• Partner closely with internal stakeholders across product, distribution, operations, and risk functions to deliver business objectives.

• Collaborate with underwriting teams to maintain alignment with global frameworks, best practices, and underwriting discipline.

Process Improvement & Talent Development

• Drive continuous improvements in underwriting processes, operational efficiency, and portfolio management.

• Lead, develop, and mentor underwriting talent to build a strong, future ready leadership pipeline.

Technical & Market Expertise

• Serve as the technical owner of Financial Lines (Commercial Portfolio) products.

• Lead underwriting strategy, product development, portfolio profitability, and broker relationship management.

• Maintain deep technical proficiency across all Financial Lines products and risks.

• Build and leverage a strong broker and intermediary network within Malaysia to expand market presence and portfolio strength.

Leadership & Financial Accountability

• Full accountability for portfolio performance, including Profit & Loss outcomes.

• Proven ability to influence and manage senior internal and external stakeholders.

• Play a key role in shaping the future underwriting organization with opportunities to build and lead a high performing team.

Job Requirements

• Minimum 8–10 years of underwriting experience, including at least 5 years specializing in Financial Lines (Commercial Portfolio).

• Strong background within a Commercial environment.

• Demonstrated expertise in Financial Lines products, global trends, and evolving risk dynamics.

• Proven experience managing broker relationships and delivering P&L performance.

• Strong technical underwriting capability and sound commercial judgment.

• Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
