Structural Designer - Carton

1. General Position Summary

To provide CAD samples, drawing and designs to sales, manufacturing and customers within specifications as requested in a timely manner.

2. Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities

Create drawings on CAD system either using the computer archive of folding carton styles or creating designs as originals.

Make samples using Datatech CAM Plotter for customer sign and style approval and labeling each sample with its relevant information.

Create innovative carton designs engineered to meet the following criteria:

To contain / display the product

To protect the product with some degree of integrity

To meet customer and plant manufacturing needs

Liaise with customer service, sales, customers, manufacturing and graphic designer on a day-to-day basis.

Liaise with other Smurfit Westrock structural design department where they are requested to have design inputs

Generate design specification sheets and dimensional drawing for sales, customers or manufacturing.

Make templates so that carton designs can be estimated by manufacturing side.

Ensuring CAD files are compatible with graphic, pre-press and die suppliers.

In conjunction with the graphic design prepare representation of printed cartons to assistant customers visualize their furnished product.

4. Job Scope

Exposed to customer specifications, design briefings, sales data, and projects. High degree of accuracy required. Must insure that exact customer requirements are met correctly. Undetected errors in this area could have far reaching effects, be costly to correct and result in the loss of clients and the subsequent effects that would result. Judgment and analysis are required in normal operation of duties. In the event of conflict incumbent must research problems or concerns. Close attention to detail is required in all areas of job. Often requires quick decisions judgment calls under pressure. Frequently works under deadlines where interruptions often occur.

5. Interpersonal Contacts

Contact with customers, sales department, production, office and personnel throughout facility. Also has contact with other company and customer facilities. A professional appearance is required.

7. Education and/or Experience

More than 5 years industry specific experience with an emphasis in printing or graphic arts, preferred in a structural design environment.

Must have good verbal and written communication skills.

Needs working knowledge of Manufacturing procedures and ISO Standards & Procedures.

Needs ability to perform math functions.

Needs to know well about how to use Packaging Structure design software.
