Job Description
Position: Technical Solutions Senior Manager, Rooftop Solar & Battery Storage
Company: Sierra Solar (a subsidiary of ERS Energy Group)
Location: Taman Desa, Kuala Lumpur, with regional site travel
1) Role Purpose
- You will be the go-to technical authority for our rooftop solar and solar-plus-storage portfolio.
- You will resolve technical issues on site, work directly with equipment manufacturers, and advise our sales, design and project teams on the best solution for complex systems.
- You will also be the person who understands how a solar system behaves inside a working factory's electrical network, including power factor, power quality and demand impacts after installation.
2) Key responsibilities
- Diagnose and resolve technical issues on site across commissioned and in-progress rooftop solar and hybrid solar-plus-battery systems (inverters, DC and AC protection, monitoring, communications, earthing, and so on).
- Investigate and resolve power factor, power quality and demand issues in factories after solar PV installation. This includes analysing load profiles and utility bills, identifying why power factor has dropped or penalties have appeared, and recommending fixes such as inverter reactive power settings, capacitor banks or automatic power factor correction (APFC), harmonic filters, or static var generators.
- Assess the interaction between solar inverters and existing factory equipment (motors, VSDs, capacitor banks, generators), including harmonics, voltage fluctuation, and reverse power or export issues.
- Carry out power quality measurements and studies on site, and explain the findings and corrective actions clearly to clients.
- Lead root-cause analysis on performance and fault issues, and recommend permanent fixes rather than temporary workarounds.
- Act as our main technical contact for manufacturers and suppliers (inverters, batteries, PV modules, mounting systems, EMS). This includes escalating issues, managing warranty and RMA claims, and following up until they are resolved.
- Evaluate and select the right technical solution for complex projects, including hybrid systems, large C&I rooftops, and sites with unusual load, grid or structural constraints.
- Review system designs, single-line diagrams and equipment specifications with our design team to make sure they are practical to build, safe and compliant, and that factory power factor and power quality impacts are considered at design stage.
- Support pre-sales with technical input on proposals, client meetings and site assessments.
- Support commissioning, testing and handover, including grid interconnection requirements with TNB and other relevant authorities.
- Build and maintain technical standards, checklists and lessons-learned documentation so issues do not repeat across projects.
- Train and guide site teams and contractors on installation quality and troubleshooting.
3) Requirements
- Degree in Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical or related engineering. Diploma holders with strong hands-on experience will also be considered.
- At least 8 to 10 years of experience in solar PV, with hands-on exposure to commissioning and troubleshooting. Experience with BESS or hybrid systems is a strong advantage.
- Proven experience with factory or industrial electrical systems, including power factor correction, power quality analysis and the effect of solar PV on a site's power factor and maximum demand.
- Solid understanding of inverter technology (including reactive power control), string and system design, protection and earthing, and PV monitoring.
- Familiarity with Malaysian regulatory and grid requirements (Energy Commission, TNB tariffs and power factor charges, and relevant schemes) is preferred.
- Proven ability to work with OEMs and suppliers and to resolve issues through them.
- Comfortable working on rooftops and in the field, with a strong commitment to safety.
- Clear communicator who can explain technical issues to clients, management and site teams.
- Professional registration or competency certification (e.g. Competent Person, Chargeman, or PEng/Ir) is an advantage.
- Willing to travel within Malaysia, and occasionally regionally.
4) Nice to Have
- Experience with C&I rooftop projects, including structural and roof considerations.
- Experience using power quality analysers and interpreting the data.
- Experience with EMS/SCADA integration or battery system sizing.
- Experience working with international suppliers (e.g. Chinese or European OEMs).
5) What We Offer
- A senior technical role with real influence on how we design and deliver systems.
- Exposure to a fast-growing solar and BESS portfolio backed by a major Malaysian infrastructure group.
- Opportunities to grow with a regional energy business.
